The tellers at my bank have been more than helpful in ordering pennies for me. Today they offered me a bag from their lobby change machine. When I got home, they called to tell me their bag of halves had just filled. They mentioned that they get alot because a guy comes in there regularly.... that he has a "business". I'm guessing that this is someone else sorting and dumping there.
I'm wondering if its worth it for me to take the bag to search. Can anyone think of any other reason someone would be dropping off so much change?
Thanks

If you have a way to dump them yourself, I would try a bag or two. If you find some silver, then I would buy more.
I would also ask what his business is. |

SouthernBelle is obviously infected. I knew it would happen.
Take a look. That's the beauty of this illness, it's free. If you don't look you'll never know.
Maybe he owns a bunch on vending machines. But the halves....? |

| I would go for it!! Lemme tell you a story...a few weeks ago, I called a branch I had never been to of a bank I had just opened an account at about a month ago. The branch manager said they had about $380 in loose halves in a bag in their coin counter. I almost didn't go pick them up, as I thought for sure they were someone elses dumps. Long story short, I said what the heck, went and picked 'em up. What do you know, the bag had 22 silver halves in it, 3 of which were 90% silver '64 JFK halves. Worst case scenario is that there are no silver coins in the bag, and you just have to dump it at your dump bank and start over. No biggie. So, yeah, I'd buy the bag asap if you can afford it. |

OK.. Ya'll have convinced me... I'm gonna go get it! If there isn't a single one in there, I'll assume that someone is dumping for sure.
And Thogey, yes, I've been infected! I really like doing the copper pennies but I also have silver bars and would like to increase my silver holdings little by little. I figure this would be a fun way to do it. Silver vs Copper... hmmm. Hard to choose! |

Hey SB- don't forget that many half searchers only edge check their coins. I've gotten a few lone 40%ers that were pretty dirty out of sealed boxes. I'm convinced that because they were dirty, they were missed by an edge sorter. So, even if the halves have been searched, the possibility exists that a few silver coins have been overlooked/missed. This reason alone should be enough to convince you to ALWAYS date check ALL of your halves!! Take the extra time to make sure you aren't missing silver, proof, NIFC, or error coins. Trust me, you'll feel a lot better knowing that you completely checked all the coins, and didn't miss or overlook anything good. |

| I agree completely goth, I started out just edge checking and then I noticed I was missing some 40%ers and NIFC's. Now I date check everything. If you are going to take the time to go to a bank and pick them up you might as well take a little extra time and check the dates. |

| Usually not very many but I had one good box where I found 5 or 6. Don't know if they are worth keeping they don't bring much of a premium do they? |

If you don't check faces, you miss Commemoratives, Balboas and 1987's plus errors.
I notice no one commented on my machine double error pics. Were the double ears and faces visible?

Sorry for the late update... my computer has been down for the last few days. Well, the guy dumping the halves definately searched them. I got not ONE keeper. Oh well. The teller let me bring them right back to dump in their machine and offered to order me a box so I did. They also called me the next day and said some "little old lady" dumped $100 in pennies.. did I want the bags. I thought... fooey, now I've got a little old lady sorting pennies! Turns out she's been saving them... I averaged 40% for those two bags.

| It never hurts to try. See if you can find a bank that can order halves by the bag. The 1st thing is to find out which armored car picks up at this bank, and order from a bank that uses another armored car service. You don't want to keep buying your dump bags back. |

Sorry... I should have explained that I sort pennies as well. I seem to normally get about 20-25% coppers from boxes of pennies, but my average on her pennies was 40% copper. Oh, and so happy to know that you look forward to my posts..lol... I figured I'm just a pain in the butt around here with all my questions!
Slick... good advice.. I'll ask them next time I'm there. I haven't really looked for bags anywhere else but I need to. |
