I was sorting pennies and came across a dark gray penny. At 1st, I thought it was play money. However, it turns out to be a real penny a 1985 D.
Is this an error or is there anything special about a penny like that?

Is the plating gone? I don't know, but I'm sure you know that we love pictures!

Is the surface rough? Could have had the copper plating chemically removed. |

PennySaved,
Ive run across missing copper plated coins as well as 'doctored' zincolns.
Here's my HA (humble advice
I the coin is a Zincoln (the only true plating error coins), it should be silver like - very shiny - almost like chrome. If it is a zincoln that is a dull gray, that is 99.99% of the time a 'doctored' coin with chemicals to remove the copper (I don't know how it is done but I have found both. My coin dealer paid $30.00 for the true 'copperless' zincoln.
If it is a pre 1982 copper that is all gray, it is (IMHO) definetely a fake.
Hope the one you found is bright and shiny!

I remember reading somewhere that if the zinc is shiny and clear, the cent missed the copper plating step and therefore would be a mint error. However if the zinc is dull, then the Cu was chemically removed. Maybe someone can confirm this. |

I found a grey penny couple nights ago....got my lighted 10X...what a difference....I could see the traces of copper in the grey area...mainly on the rim and in the recess's i did once find a shiny gray penney but that was before the 10x and I don't know where it went to to compare. Shiny good...dull not...my HO(humble opinion) Cheers! |

I found a shiny chrome like penny once. It is a mint error if it missed the copper plating step? How can you tell if this occurred? |

You can remove the copper plating with pretty easily obtainable chemicals and keep the zinc shiny if you do it right, this guy did it here: You must be logged in to see this link. .
My guess is that the penny was heated to near the melting temp of the zinc inside to get that dull color. I'll give it a try to see if this works and I'll post back if I find anything.

If I find a post 1982 penny that is shiny silver (rather than dull gray), my next step is to take it to the local coin dealer ... an honest guy, though a bit high priced on stuff ... who will give an honest opinion/evaluation of the coin (and usually some kind of offer to buy it)

Could be an unplated zincoln. Worth some bucks. Could be a zincoln with the copper plating chemically removed. Still pretty cool.
Didn't think of this until now but... Could be a zincoln which has had an additional "post-mint" plating with a grey metal. People like to play with their chemistry sets. :) |
