I decided to cash in my "collection" that I've built up for the last week or so..
3 microwaves, a dishwasher, an AC, 40 lbs of insulated wire, 2 al/cu radiators, copper tubing, 90 lbs of electric motors / transformers..

Had I turned this in this past summer, I would have gotten $100 easy, now, with the falling metal prices, $35...Just have to wait till prices go back up!

Schmidie, welcome! Maybe the prices are down, but no worry they will rise.... Once again welcome.

I got comfortable with the scrap yard I had switched to and thought I didnt need to bother to call and get the prices. I THOUGHT I could count on them to give me fair and top prices...

Clean Aluminum Extrusions: $.50/lb
Clean Aluminum Sheet: $.38/lb
USED Aluminum cans: $.50/lb
Clean Yellow Brass: $1.00/lb
Stainless Steel: $.42/lb

I feel there were two factors for why I got ripped so bad:
1) the normal buyer was not there
2) I did not bother to call and get prices before "selling" it to them (was more like giving it to them).

Moral of the story: get prices before you give them any metal.

I agree, I am officially in the hoarding stage until prices are at least respectfull again. By this spring I should have a real nice load.

my quote for the week on aluminum sheet if I had more than 1000 lbs was 35 cents a lbs. I have over 1000 lbs of sheet, 3000 lbs of cast, and many other sorts, but think I will wait a week or two.

I'm with all of you and am holding onto my scrap for the time being. I might have to take the steel in soon since I am running out of places to put it.

Has anybody taken apart a gas range and brought it in? About how much would you expect dollar wise from a gas range? We have to get ride of one at work and either I will take it or it will get taken to an appliance store.

Thats my current plan, at least for my copper. When they said $1.25 a pound I thought they were joking. They were dead serious.

I believe Copper will pick up in December, but thats my pure guess.

I find mine either on the side of the road or people give it to me. (I'm well known as a scrapper). Having a truck I just keep my eyes open when I'm out. I have a few routes I run on trash days, but you have to be careful. Right now it's easy to use more gas than the srap accumulated is worth.

Are you throwing that out?

I'm a hoarder and a scavenger, metal detectorist and person who walks around alot. Two common items on city streets and parking lots are ball point pens and disposable lighters. Many of the pens have simply been dropped or fallen out of cars or thrown away prematurely and are good, likewise with the lighters. The pens I collect and donate to my local rural post office. I don't smoke much but I do heat with wood so never have to buy matches (there are alot of those on the streets also).

Took the truck and trailer to work on saturday as usual, and got 4 washing machines, couple of bicycles, and some tin off the side of the road. Took it to the yard today and got $45 for 900lbs. Gotta love free money!

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

I'm SO doing that next time! Must be a "crazier" look than I get from the people waiting behind me in line at the bank!

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

Hauled in a load of cans, plus 184 lbs of steel and 12 lbs of mixed copper, bronze and brass, got a lousy $42.50 for it. Oh well, I'm going to use it to buy shares of Alcoa (AA), should get me about 5 shares. We'll see what that's worth once the price of aluminum comes back. Happy scrapping to all!

Work. I'm in the HVAC/R industry. The coils are all evaporator or condensing coils. The older package units have the best coils. Frequently three to four rows deep. I thought I took some pictures and posted them, but maybe not....
