Silver Santa and the Copper Elf both paid me a visit today, by accident. I was returning zincs and struck up a conversation with the teller. He was bragging about all the "big" dollars he has saved from the drawer and "hidden." I didn't have the heart to try and fast talk him out of them, but then he started bragging about how some old woman had brought in a bunch of old half dollars last week. I'm thinking, "cool, maybe I can score some 40%!" He flashes an entire roll of 63's and 64's and starts calling out the dates. I'm squirming, between wishing he would be quiet and not draw attention to us, and itching to grab the ones he's shown. So real nonchalant, I mention, "I'll take those, if you're trying to get rid of them." He says sure. As we're doing that transaction he mentions she brought in $60 worth. I tell him (lucky I had some money)"I'll take them all."
Got over to work, and just now had a chance to see what was inside. Final tally:

one about good 1917 Walker
79 Franklins, one of them a BU 1958
40 1964 Kennedy's

I'm headed to the credit union next. You CWR searchers are gonna convert me from copper sorting yet!

Hoard now and hold on!

Please don't post these on the silver tracking threads, you're going to skew our stats for the rest of the year. Kidding aside, what a dream day - fantastic!

what's weird is that I'm not a CWR hunter. I don't normally ask for rolls, just do the copper penny thing. I wouldn't have known to buy them if we hadn't started talking and his boasting about the old halves. I only bought them cuz it seemed like a no-brainer. Heck, I would have been happy if there was just one or two 40% in each roll. I know Hoard and Slickeast have had some big silver finds, don't know if this ranks with them or not, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth, right?

beauanderos -

YOU DA MAN!!!

I think that certainly ranks up there in the Top 5 or 10 finds reported on here this year. Sweet too that two-thirds of them were Bens/Walker.

AWESOME BABY.

I'm sooooooo jealous, $60 bucks for halves valued in the $700 range. I almost feel sorry for the person who deposited those, and even more so for the teller who let them go at face. Excellent score I must say.

I'm weighing the idea of giving the teller a $50 tip next time I see him... maybe that would encourage him to hunt for me. Then again, maybe that would open his eyes to the opportunity he has himself. Dilemma. The bank is an entity that traffics in face value for the coins they dispense, so I feel no remorse in asking to buy them at that price.

I wouldn't give them a $50 tip. If you do, they will realize that there is more value in silver coins then they think. Think about it, if you gave someone something, and they tipped you $50, you would be thinking to yourself " What did I just give away?"

Maybe a small bag of candies or a box of donuts. Down play the value , let them think you are doing them more of a favor by taking them

I agree with slickeast. As nice as your thought is to give a tip, it's probably just not a good idea. In fact...in the banking/brokerage business there are rules about gifts you can accept from a customer/client...he may be breaking company/industry rules by accepting a "tip" from you. If I recall correctly I think the annual gift limit you can accept from a customer/client was $100.00.

FANTASTIC!! Every now and then, a SILVER searcher makes a BIG SILVER Score. The important thing is not to give up on the searching; eventually the BIG Scores do come your way! Congrats....

Nice score - I agree, no tip. A sealed box of chocolates might be in order. Congrats and I imagine you are tempted to start looking for a few more rolls of halves...

Thanks all, for the congrats. It was indeed a good feeling when I saw him fan that first roll of silver like a dealer in Vegas. I didn't know for sure that the other rolls would also contain silver, but decided to take the chance. Didn't even think to ask if the o.w. had turned in dimes and quarters... but I will now. Maybe, since he was going on and on about his "big dollar" stash he's found, I'll take him a cull Morgan instead as a way to say thanks. I also thought about telling him I'd give him $8 for every big silver dollar he finds for me.

Hmmm, if he was bragging about the big dollars, I wonder how many the lady turned in if she turned in 6 rolls of silver halves...........
