I found an '85 S proof in a brinks box tonight. It doesn't look like it's spent more than a few days in circulation as it has a nice perfect golden mirrored finish. Do you guys find many nice proofs like this?

I've found about a roll and a half of proof halves in 2+ years, 1 cent, half dozen nickels.

I rarely notice the s mint marks while searching. It might be because there aren't many out there. I did accidentally pick out a 1986 s one night. I figure there's some out there but.... you have to hand sort them. Nice and bright proofs probably jump out and glare at you :)

Only one proof in 250K sorted, and it was a dirty crummy 1987-S. Didn't even notice it at first glance since the mintmark was covered with crud. Was only able to tell by the rim, which I then removed to crud to expose the S mintmark. I'm sure a few others like this might've passed through my sorting without notice.

I have found a couple of proofs since I started sorting. Always fun to find nice coins.

Never found a proof cent via handsorting. It is very possible that I could have missed an impaired one however.

I have never been fortunate to find a proof penny. Nickels though, I've found 14 of them.

They are pretty rare. I found my first two proofs in just the last two weeks after more than three years of searching. I found a 1995 S silver Kennedy proof and a 1983S proof penny.

Dumb question probably, but how do you tell a proof from a normal minted coin?

Found a 1976-S tonight, my first in about 800,000 sorted. Like Scotty says, it jumped out at me. They only minted 4.5 million, so I'm not surprised it seems so unusual to find one. Indians are easier!

A proof goes through a different striking process that leaves the devices somewhat "frosted" and the fields like a mirror. The contrast is what gives them away.

found a beautiful 1990-S tonight. I don't search my zinc piles. If I don't see it right on top I'll miss it. Who knows how many have been returned to bank

I've found 1 proof half, but no other denominations.

Are you throwing that out?

Proof pennies are rare in my experience. Before finding my first proof penny, I found 1 flying eagle, 2 indian heads, and 2 1909 VDB's. The VDB's weren't the S mint, but still.

Mikep2020 makes a good point though - a dirty penny is a dirty penny, proof or not. It'd be tough to tell the difference at a glance.

I've found quite a few proof halves.

Out of the pennies I've sorted, I've found maybe half a dozen Indians. And it took me until just last week to find my first proof. A very beautiful 2006 S.
