Hi all,
I'm ultra new to the game and almost completely uniformed when it comes to numismatics, but I came across this deal at a local shop recently. I recall an earlier thread where a few members mentioned how they would jump all over Morgans at 15 a pop, and was wondering if I should do the same. As of today, coinflation lists the silver content alone at 13.35 per piece, so it seems like a no-brainer.
Is there any point at which the condition becomes an issue? Im assuming they are pretty banged up in rolls, but since Im buying them primarily as bullion, I guess this doesn't matter too much. Just wanted to double check, as I'm still a small fry and $300 isn't an insignificant amount of money for me - thanks for the feedback!

| If you can read the dates and mintmarks and they aren't wore down to a slick I would buy them. |

| My local dealer sells his bad looking culls for $16, so I say it sounds like a good deal. |

If they're not slick or holed jump on it. Maybe if there's only 1 hole...... |

| If they are in any kind of decent condition at all I sure would buy them. Although they are at dealer so I would be a little suspicious. But definitely stop by and take a look at them. |

i figure even bent or polished ones should be worth melt plus a buck, on the theory that uncle sam is better than engelhardt. at G-4 i'd pay $16, which is basically a very circulated coin with readable features and no major damage.
knowing coin dealers, its probably a bunch of slicks, bent rims, polished, holed, etc. $14 is probably a more fair price for those but its worth checking out. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

Unless your dealer has put them aside, or closes early on Friday and stays closed for the weekend, I can't imagine he'll still have them on Monday. Even if they're slicks they're a steal IMO. |

Quick update - went in today to check out the lot, and the shop keep now said the roll is 360, which comes out to $375 after tax. The good news is, the condition of the coins is far better than I had expected. In fact, I'm thinking that his quick assessment of the condition of the coins caused him to up the price. I suppose I could have haggled a bit, or mentioned that he quoted a different price last week, but frankly I was a bit intimidated, since its a field I have such little knowledge in. I asked him to hold the roll for me, and that I'd return during the week.
I'm not very familiar with coin grades (something that I will work to remedy asap), but I can't imagine these coins being in any less than "good" condition. All of the dates and major characteristics of the coins were clearly visible. No holes or any major flaws, and the hair and some of the finer details even seemed to be pretty sharp. Are they still a good buy at almost 19 a pop? Thanks again for all the help. |

| Hmmm I don't know if I would want to do business with someone who renigs on a deal. You will probably go in tomorrow and they will be up at $21 a piece. |

Who cares the condition, if they're common date coins, even high grade, they're not worth much

| I would not buy just for the fact that he changed the price. I know my dealer would have said if I quoted you $300.00 than that's what you get them for. If you still want them I would tell him he quoted you $300.00 for the roll and see what he says. If you can split the difference and get them for $330.00 that is not a bad deal. There was some just offered on this forum for $16.75 which was a good price. S19.00 for common dates might be a little high unless they are in really good shape. |
