I was thinking in my mind that I would post here that I had yet to find a silver dime in the CWR's of dimes I pick up each week. But as I was going thru about 8 CWR's, there was a very thin silver dime mixed in. It appears to be 1880; only the tops of the digits are visible. I can see the outline of the seated libesrty but no detail. On the back, only ONE DIME is visible. Not much silver left in this. Still, it will probably be enough to keep me picking up CWRs. I still find the CWR's in this area disappointing, but I can no longer say they are 0-yield.

NICE!!
While I'm no moderator, I think new treads are for Tracking Treads Only. I suggest posting nice great finds as these within the *Official Mar 2010 Half Dollars and Other Coins thread instead of starting a new thread here. |

| Moving this thread over to the silver area. This area is for tracking threads only. No problem and no offense - this section is but a few hours old. That is the first Seated Liberty Dime I've seen reported here. You just never know what you will find - that makes it fun. |

Here are poor pictures of a very poor coin. The stripes are the result of using a florescent light source --- I was using my cell phone, and had trouble getting enough light onto this very worn coin to show any details. The florescent light was easiest to put even with the coin.
In any event, we can be sure this coin wasn't from GrandPa's collection ---- I think it has been traveling every day since 1880.
And thanks for moving this to a more appropriate forum. |

You'd be surprized how much silver is still there. Sure, your devices are worn down, but I'll bet that dime is still 2.15 grams (new 2.5). The majority of the weight is in the core. As far as it traveling since 1880? I think this puppy was sitting in a jar or box somewhere, or a Boomer's parents stash... and when it got passed down they didn't think it worth keeping due to condition. Or it could have been stolen or "borrowed" by a child not knowing it's value due to antiquity, and spent. That's what makes searching fun. Even though modern CU percentages continue to very slowly drop, you can rest assured that (human nature being what it is) old time collections of all types of collectible coins will be added to the mix from time to time. I think you found part of one! Congratulations, that had to take your breath away for a few seconds, eh? |

Now I am kicking myself. I passed up on a bag of dimes today. |

Regarding where this poor coin has been, I think you may be right that it came from some jar somewhere, because in its poor condition, it would be very difficult to pass off as a real dime. As to it's weight, I will check that, and report back. I think it really is going to be quite light. At one time I was buying Barber halfs at melt (~G or AG, they all had dates), but I quit and switched to Walking Liberty, because the Barbers litterally did not stack up very well --- a stack of 20 was about 2/3 the height of the Walkers, and they felt noticably lighter. |
