I am a parking enforcement officer in my township. I mostly write parking tickets, but one of my duties is to help empty the roughly 700 parking meters here. We take in about $1500 weekly in nickels, dimes and quarters. Now before you think I'm in small change heaven, let me say I've never went through this money looking gems.Over the years I know there must have been real silver, and other valuable coins ripe for the taking, but I never wanted to jeopardize my job. It just wouldn't look good going though all this money, but let me tell you it takes self control!

Seems like maybe the Township should sell the burden of collecting and maintaining these coins to a private entity! This is one of those scenarios to which I would do the math to find whether the labor and maintenance cost out weigh the profit margin collected by the township.

Just as municipalities contract out many services this one seems profitable at face value.

How many people does it take to collect and secure each week? How many total man hours? Does each employee have a benefit package as well as retirement?

That is an interesting situation you have, have you thought of any ideas ?

sort them by sound, When I do bags of dimes I dump the bag into a bucket and I can hear the silver stop and pull it out Then hand sort. I only miss about 10% doing it this way dumping a bag of 5000 dimes only takes about 60 seconds. not as affective as sight sorting but it works and is fast. when you have a silver in the bag you can hear it.. just have replacements to toss in the bag when you remove the silver.

Edit or talk with your superviser and offer to split the silver if he will let you go through them after your shift.

To answer some of the above questions:our rates for parking are very low. we are a friendly township that doesn't burden are citizens with high parking fees. A lone quarter will get you an hour of parking in our downtown area. However, I do write a lot of parking tickets which contributes a lot of money to the government coffers. If you can't put a quarter in the meter, you deserva a $25 dollar ticket. We probably write about $750,000 in tickets a year. But that is beside the point. I was talking about the masive amounts of change that we handle and can not rifle through. I have seen silver quarters and dimes, and very old nickels that we can not touch. That is my point.

I would try to find a way to get the coins even if you buy them from the bank where they would end up at.

Well, depending on how much bureaucracy there is, you might see if you can buy the coin off of the township. You might be able to pitch the savings in having someone deposit it "on the clock" vs. you buying it after someone else has verified the count.

Of course, this still might put you in a bad spot with people who tend to assume the worst rather than see the reality of the situation, or those who would want to see you fired for another reason.

You could always work something out with the bank tellers you deposit with as well.

It's Half Time...all the time.

Find out which bank they deposit the money at and start sorting change from that bank.

I would not touch those coins until they have been counted by another entity, whether that be a colleague or bank. Finding the occasional silver dime quarter and nickel is not worth getting fired or in trouble at work.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.

You are right not to do anything that would get you fired. Remember honesty is a virtue. Public servants need to be beyond approach. Too bad our polititians in DC could't follow you lead.
