Why Copper Bullion Should Not Shine
I have had the privileged to work with scrap metal in much larger quantities than most. I started simply cruising the streets with my friends Father as he would sniff out the pockets of "money". Having a mentor allowed me to learn the trade at an accelerated speed. I was amazed to learn that there was $2.50 worth of metal in an old toilet at the side of the road or that every refrigerator is worth $5.00 to $7.00 plus in just the aluminum and copper content. Through the months I spent with him we developed a friendship that I truly admired and respected, telling me stories of the war and how he survived to come home and start over always appreciating his every breath.
Along this journey it became clear to me what true value there was in metal as a resource. Very few people I encounter really understand how large an operation recycling is. For most it means putting certain items in a different container for the trash man or an added expense to the business owner to get rid of the unwanted. Many don't understand that what they buy today depends on what was thrown out yesterday. So we would make our way through the streets making friends with anyone that was stuck with unwanted metal. Uniquely, I was shown where all the "goodies" were on everything we touched, maximizing our profits and making the efforts that much more rewarding.
The beauty and reward in the scrap business is that you are helping everyone by your work. From the holder of an auto that has sat for years, to the yard that grinds it up, all the way to the consumer of new products. As an intermediary you keep the wheels of production rolling, allowing commerce to flow and costs to remain affordable.
"Cash is King!" He would say as we collected and divided our daily purse. But we did not always take everything to the yard even though the cash was readily available. Copper and all precious metal was stored and cleaned and cut to maximize and save for a rainy day as he would say.
What I realized was that this wirer'y old man was timing the market. We would hoard for months at a time until one day we would load up the truck (usually it was raining) with the months of metal that had been building in our bins to max capacity. Off we would go to collect the cash! Instantly our pockets were fat! Full of the hard work and patience that we had labored. We would then venture off to breakfast so he could flirt with the waitress and tell war stories of his special forces experience.
Over my time with this unique and interesting man I seen how anyone with initiative can prosper. We put money in our pockets daily in no small amounts. We developed relationships with all that needed our service and enjoyed our conversation, to the point we were simply on call!
Copper and metal is a cash business. Not because it is shined and polished but because it it raw and dirty! Bullion that can be redeemed for cash at face value! Not a reduced premium because you are selling! Everyone should have the capacity and knowledge to profit from this material given by the creator!

I know! And you typed all of that without any copies and pastes! You are skilled and thought-provoking, cptindy! It's nice to have you around RealCent, because you are a necessity to us. I just realized that we both joined this site the exact same day! Jan. 15. Great post, I'll try to absorb every word I can. Kirkland |
