I know this is a Copper Penny Bullion Forum, but I just use it for CRH-ing results and reading other people's CRH-ing results. I find it too tiresome keeping coppers after collecting about 30 lbs of it. I just throw it with the zincs and roll em back up

Why on earth would you search penny rolls then "just throw it with the zincs and roll em back up"? What's the point?? |

Save them a little longer until you have $90-95 and sell them here. Someone would give you 1.3 easy. |

Why not? I only hunt for wheats and indians (if I ever find one ). It's a faster turnaround profit if I need to sell my coins. Skipping looking for dates really speeds up the process. I can go through a box of pennies in about 15-20 minutes where as if I look at dates and sort out copper it can take me up to an hour to go through the box.

Ditto. If you're already sorting through pennies and find coppers, why not keep adding them to your stash?
I don't sort for coppers, just wheats. |

Keep turning them back in.. that way there will be more for those of us that really want them.
I bought out Neckro's copper hoard. I have even bought silver and gold from him.
I sell off some of the copper and buy silver with it. Much faster than CRHing to find silver. Sold off some copper at coin club tonight and then bought a roll of silver dimes in the auction for 11x.
I used to sort pennies the same way as rakattack.. but back then they were all copper. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I see auctions on eBay for 10 lbs of copper going for $30 + $6.95 shipping and they're actually selling!! I MIGHT just have to start sorting for coppers again. That's more than 2x face :) |

I might just have to start selling on eBay again. That's almost enough to cover the new fees. |

I could probably move a ton or two before you get ramped up. |

You said you didn't sort out the copper cents. Ya gots to have a few on hand before you start sellin' 'em on the Bay. I figured I could move a couple of tons real fast to get a little extra silver money and be out of your way before you wanted to run your first auction.
Many of us have just continued to sort and stack up copper waiting for the price to come back. |

HCBTT, for your info I have 30 lbs on hand, even though it's nothing compared to your tons of copper :)
I used to sort coppers before it got too tiresome. |

30 lbs is 3 10lb auctions or 1 30 lb auction. Throw them on the bay and see if you get any bites.
If HCBTT puts 100 auctions up, consider that to be chumming the water. Put yours up for 1 dollar less and see if you can get someone to take the bait. |

It's not common at this site for a member to admit to sorting pennies just for the old stuff and tossing the other copper, but I bet there are more penny sorters out there of this type than there are copper hoarders. For me the old stuff is the main reason I sort (entertainment) but bringing coppers back to the bank seems counter-intuitive, more hauling for less benefit. For now I just store it, but I know there are buyers on this site and elsewhere. |

I have the ACE and have done about 90lbs in a few months. Then I realized all the mint marks and potential error coins I am missing (WAM, CAM) and started hand sorting again. I use the ace now exclusively for 82's. I dont mind the hand sorting, I know I am not going to be a huge opperation but the though of letting a 92 CAM go into the reject bin bothered me. Still love the ace. Its a nice litte machine. If you are small time, its definately worth the cost. So long story short, yes I keep coppers:) |

Where are you seeing these auctions where 10 lbs. are selling for $30.00? I see several 5 lb. auctions for $9.99 with no bids. |

It really is not a great thing to do, dumping the coppers with the zincs. Copper cents have a melt value of over 2 cents a piece and it is odd as to why one would not keep them and sell them for a profit later on. If you ever need to sell some of your coppers, you can do so on this forum, or maybe eBay. Still, I hope you enjoy your Wheat Penny, Dimes, and other cool finds in your "CRH-ing." Kirkland
The REAL value of a copper cent including shipping is currently 1.35x. Subtract out shipping and you are looking at 1.22x. That's no where near "2x", so not keeping copper makes sense in many ways.
Keeping copper means you have to allocate space and capital. Simply hunting for "cool finds" means your capital isn't tied up and you still get most of the gains since the copper gain (right now) is minimal.
"Cool finds", I would argue is at least as profitable (in current trade) as copper. Cases in point: - 2009 and 2010 BU coins sell for way over face. - Every other year BU coins sell for over face. - Wheats 4x+ - Mint errors go for $10 to $100 or more - Double dies go for $10 to $100 or more
Meanwhile, "copper" goes for (after shipping) 1.22x. (NOTE: This is not including those "professional sites" that are getting 2x or higher now. This is "selling on this forum" based on ACTUAL prices realized.)
That said: I'm in for the long haul. Once cents can be melted they are instantly worth whatever copper is plus shipping. That's a nice gain! |
