I had a car cover stolen a month ago, and there are sometimes people walking down my street. I want to install a motion-operated video system so that if people are fooling around I can see who and what happened.

I can't afford much. Any recommendations?

(I know somebody is going to suggest a dog, but I'm allergic to animals.)

Look into game cameras. They're made for hunters, primarily deer hunters. They're motion activated, and some even take infrared photos at night. They range anywhere from $60-200. They use compact flash memory cards. Just be sure to put it where IT won't get stolen.

I'm thinking about putting one on my front porch. I think someone might be lifting my mail.

Most bad things seem to happen at night, and a really good IR video camera that can be used to identify faces and especially vehicle plates for up to any meaningful distance is at least $1500. No plates = No police action!

Try this.

Take the camera and a infer-red spot light, then connect it to a T.V. and or VCR. Use the remote control for the T.V. to switch over and view what is going on outside if you hear a noise or whatever.

All for about a $150.

Another thing is someone leaves trash-in-hand like a soda bottle by my garbage can as they walk by. They'll be surprised when I find out who!

If you can't afford cameras, I would install those outdoor motion lights. I have these at my house. It saves energy and at the same time if someone is starting to walk up your driveway the light flashes on them all of the sudden.

Yep, I've got motion lights and will install soon, and I'll rig up a cheap camera setup if I can!

Are you in town?

If I am out for a walk and there is garbage on the ground and I see a can by the curb I will pick it up and throw it in it without thinking about it. If you're in the country I would think it is weird. If they stole your car, they will steal your camera, so make sure it is hidden.

Got the motion flood lights in. Tricky to adjust--despite an hour of attempted adjustments, either lights up when cars pass on the street or stays off until object is too close. Guess I don't have the touch. Opted for too sensitive rather than not enough; maybe the kleptos will keep on driving.

Also got a motion chime I'm going to try out.

Last week I didn't get any mail for 3 days, including the grocery ad day, so I'm suspicious just like you Jack.

Looking into the camera now.

Really a dog is the way to go if you want good security. My 90lb rottie/pit mix scares the hell out of most people within sight of my house. You can hear him a couple hundred feet away barking inside. Flood lights on motion sensors are also good. Getting the right setting for the distance for the lights to come on does take two people though. Other thing with mail, purchase a locking mail box or redirect your mail to a PO box. Mail in a regular mail box is just asking for a theif to come and get it.

Motion chime added. People hanging around will be chimed at and I will be alerted. Think it scared off a small animal too.
