my current hoard 32 pounds worth about 50$, when I first started I threw all the 1982 in with the main hoard I know all my 1982s are copper just by simple flip test. but then thought if I ever sold it then it would be a lot better to just list it as all 59-81's. so I hand sorted all them to separate the 1982 to be in their own container. took me about 6 hours to read every date and spread across 4 days. I found 1 2003 cent that some how got in there that made it worth all the time I took to take out the 82's. what would you do if someone told you they threw a handful of zinc pennies into your loose hoard. would it bother you inside so much to know your copper is contaminated with zinc? would you resort it all

I once accidentally threw in a handful of zincs in my copper penny basket, but I was able to fish them all out since they were all on the top. I once threw a handful of coppers in to the trash bin because I wasn't paying attention. Fished them all out too, fortunately no liquid or food trash in there at the time! I will one day do a re-sort of all my coppers just in case I accidentally threw in some zinkies without knowing it. Back when I first started, I threw in all 1982's just like you and didn't find out until later that there were zinc ones from that year too! Nowadays, I use the drop test. *Ring!* Good sound. *Thunk!* Bad sound.

| I think anyone in this hobby has OCD. I have it and I am proud to say I do. |

Sound like a job for the Ryedale. I once dumped about 75.00 of mixed coin into a 5 gallon bucket to fill it. Had about 200.00 coppers in it already. Glad i had 3 Ryedales that day.
Now i think twice before adding coins to any bucket. |

| I'm new to this site and I must say, many of you people are very entertaining. Claiming to have OCD and being proud of it! The unabashed honesty is really refreshing. Any way, for me it all began by hoarding silver coins to counter hyperinflation. But I stumbled across this site and I've learned about the potential increasing value of pre-82 copper and nickel. I really don't believe any of you have OCD. You're just extremely focused. Keep up the good work and thanks for the laughs. |

Welcome, PointOmega! It is nice to have you around as it is all the other new members! BTW, I am not focused if I threw precious coppers in the trash! |

I don't save 82's at all. If I ever get a Ryedale then I will.
Am I the only lazy one out there? |

| Cherokee Bill, I just got 4+ pounds of copper out of the 1982 pennies in the last $200 I sorted. That is $12 worth. Once you get to a thousand that would be $60 melt value, so yes I believe it is worth it to check and keep them. I bought a digital gram scale on ebay with 1/10 gram accuracy for $7.50 with free shipping. I think it is worth it to keep as many coppers as you can. If you have gone to the trouble to buy them why not get all you can. |
