Don't loose hope! You never know what could be in a roll, so keep on searching! I have not found any before, but I think at least one or two of the others here mentioned that they have.
Edit: Rats, you beat me to it Kurr. Sometimes I just wish I could halt everything while I am crafting up a reply! |

Not only are the wheat cents rare, but the s vdb are a percentage from them, not to mention many were removed from circulation Long Long ago. By the odds you will NEVER find one, no matter if you search 1 Billion pennies.
But all it takes is that one Wheat collection to be cashed in at the bank by a mean brother or 'dumb' grandchild, and you will be checking your britches from all the excitement! |
"May your percentages ever increase!" |

There is a rumor that an unsearched bag sold on ebay by a realcent member had an 09svbd in it. perhaps someone can verify that? |

| There's also a rumor that for a promotion someone put one into circulation to see if it ever got reported as found. I don't know... if I found one, I don't know that I would tell Coin World magazine or whoever, but I sure would tell my bros at RealCent! Just as soon as I got done changing my pants. |

quote: So many people, in fact, that you might not think there was much need for Scott Travers to add his two cents.
But he has.
Three cents, for good measure.
"I just wanted to put a little magic into everyday life," said Mr. Travers, a rare-coin expert based in New York.
Last month, in Times Square, he gave a practical demonstration of the idea by deliberately putting three of his valuable rare pennies worth a total of $1,500 into circulation.
One of them – a 1914-D Lincoln cent worth $300 – he spent on a pretzel.
Another – a 1908-S Indian head cent worth $200 – he spent on a newspaper.
The third was the big enchilada: a 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, worth $1,000. He used that to buy a bottle of water.
I know there was another story (Not the one above) where some guy spent a 1909-S VDB at a hot dog stand right in front of camera's, and when one of the news networks went back the next day, the cart guy told them that some cameraguy went back to him like 15 minutes later and bought all of his pennies off him. |

It was me.. lol. It happened about 4 or 5 years ago. I used to be one of the biggest sellers of unsearched bags of wheats on ebay. I sold hundreds of bags under my ebay seller name slotdragracer. Obviously with the volume I was doing it was certainly not possible to search the bags even if I wanted to. The guy that found it was a repeat customer in Kansas. I was both happy for him and at the same time a little sad for myself since that was the only hole in my album and I had been staring at that hole for decades. He told me the story of how he saw that it was a 1909-S and got all excited. Then he sloooooowly turned it over.. not even daring to hope.. and there was the VDB! He said it was 1AM in the morning and he was so excited he just had to tell somebody. His wife was sound asleep, so he drove to the all-night donut shop to share his good fortune with somebody that was actually awake at that hour. I was actually very happy for him.. even if a little jealous. That was the only time I had a customer report finding one of those out of several hundred bags sold.
The ANA releases 1909-S VDB coins just about every year the week before their annual convention. They then offer a reward for the person that finds it and brings it in to the convention. It is released in the convention city. Most of the time it is never found, or whoever finds it just keeps it for their collection and never brings it to the convention. So there are a few out there.. but the odds are very, very long. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Think of how many thousands of people "save those old wheaties" but have absolutely no idea as to which ones would be worth more than a few cents. Every time someone finds out I collect coins they tell me they have some in a jar or a box or a Crown Royal bag somewhere. EVERY time. And they almost always say something about having wheaties. But you KNOW none of them know which ones to look for. They just know the back is different. So... How many 9SVDBs do you think are in THOSE collections? |

I remember reading local news articles in Pittsburgh of a dealer releasing 1931-S and if I remember right, a 1914-D into local circulation. I've forgotten more about this story than I remember, but I think it was done in order to raise interest in the hobby... plus he said that he would buy the coins back from whomever found them. Maybe it was just a way for him to get people to bring these coins into his shop.
Anyway, I estimate that there is one 1909-S VDB still in circulation somewhere. Admittedly, the data is not perfect, but you can play around with the spreadsheet however you want:
