I went through a box of halves yesterday and found a 1995-S silver Kennedy half. I couldn't believe it. I opened the roll and saw this bright silver edge and I knew it was something good. I couldn't get the paper off fast enough to see what it was. The finish is a little dull, I know you are never supposed to clean a coin but can you polish a coin a bit to make it look better or does that bring down the value as well?

| DO NOT POLISH COINS. That also brings the value down, and coin dealers would agree. Keep it in it's present state without cleaning or polishing it. Nice find, anyway! I am yet to find silver proof coin in my searches. |

| Yeah I agree with you I kind of figured polishing is the same as cleaning. |

proof coins are minted a little differently.
The dies are polished and they're pressed different, at a slower rate.
I think any kind of rubbing would degrade the lines that are unique to proofs.
How do you suppose a proof wound up in a bankroll? Do you think someone actually broke open a proof set and spent the coin? |

| Nice find! Not common at all. Seems less likely than finding a Buffalo Nickel or maybe even than finding an Indian penny. |

Thogey,
You are probably right. The only way I think that coin could end up in circulation is if some unknowing person broke open a proof set, desperate for even just the slightest bit of money he or she could cash in. How else would that get there? |

That's what I was thinking someone probably stole it and rather than take a chance getting caught with it they just spent it for face value. |

| That could be true also, some kid broke open the proof set that Grandpa gave him for his birthday present to buy an ice cream cone. |

| This reminds me of a story my friend's father told me once. His relative had collected an entire cigar box full of Morgan silver dollars and saved them over the years. Later, his dumb wife grabbed a handful of them and went out to buy cheeseburgers for herself and their kids. As you can imagine, her husband was very upset about that and then- well we don't have to go that far. Some people don't know the value of collectible coins. Tragic. |

| I found a silver proof, I think 2003 S a few months back. It was in a CWR of halves. I promptly put it in a 2x2 and threw it in the safe. You dont see them often but if you do its quite a rush to find one. |

| I got three rolls of halves last year from a drive by and they were mostly UNC 05 and 06 of both mints. I also got 2 40% and 3 clad proofs. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Awesome Find ND! All my halves searching has never turned up one of those. I thought I had one the other day- an '03S- not a hint of copper on the edge. I had to weigh it to confirm it was just a very sneaky clad.
Ditto on not cleaning... |

my funds are low.... I don't think there were any Ikes minted in 2003. Not sure what you are referencing. But the weight you reference is of a silver dollar(40%) |
