I came across a coin that I had a hard time researching. I think it is a 20 Mark (Kreuzer)from southern German bishopric of Wurzburg featuring Duke Franz Ludwig von Erthal (1779-95). The coin is dated 1785 and has a small nick out of the rim just above Mr Ludwig's head on the obverse (or maybe reverse) of the coin. Other than the small nick, the coin is in good shape. Does anyone have an international coin book handy to give me a ball-park on the value? I tried to add a photograph of the coin, but can't seem to figure out how to copy and paste images into this post. Any help is greatly appreciated!

That's funny you found that coin - I've been to the Bishop of Wurzburg's palace in Germany, haha. The Bishop used to be the highest political authority in the region. |

Maybe this will help, from Catholic Encyclopedia:
In 1631 the Swedes conquered the diocese and city, which, united with Bamberg, was given to Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar as the Duchy of Franconia. It was not until the imperial troops were victorious at Nordlingen in 1634 that Bishop Frederick von Hatzfeld (1631-42) could enter his diocese. Notwithstanding their oppression by the Swedes, the population remained loyal to the Catholic Faith. During the reign of John Philip von Schönborn (1642-73) the diocese recovered from the injuries of the Thirty Years War. Francis Philip von Greiffenklau (1699-1717) had the cathedral and the Church of St. Peter ornamented in the Baroque style. The diocese ad city prospered greatly under Philip Francis von Schönborn (1719-24), who laid the corner-stone of the episcopal palace at Würzburg, one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the world. Christopher von Hutten (1724-29), and Frederick Karl von Schönborn (1729-46). Adam von Seinsheim (1755-79), during whose episcopate the Seven Years War caused the diocese great suffering, did much for the benefit of the primary schools. He was followed by the excellent Bishop Francis Ludwig von Erthal (1759-95). The last Prince-Bishop of Würzburg was George Karl von Fechenbach. In 1802 the diocese, which contained over 250,000 inhabitants, was secularized and given to Bavaria. After the Peace of Pressburg, Bavaria was obliged to cede it to the brother of Emperor Francis, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, who ruled it as the Grand Duchy of Würzburg until 1814. After the fall of Napoleon the territory reverted to Bavaria. |

AGressive: thanks for the posts. Sorry for the late reply ..... out on business for a few days ;( Unfortunately, my coin does not look like the one in your reply. I really wish I could figure out how to post photos. Any tricks to posting photos, or do I just need to be a seasoned vet on the forum before I am granted privilege?
PennySaved; I purchased a lot of coins from a private seller (un-searched) and found it in the bottom of the pile. I'll try to post photos again, arrrrgggggg!

Posting photos is hard, VERY HARD, I think there is so much work involved it isn't worth the effort. But, alas, it can be done. "It's magic" as uthminista puts it. That's a pretty cool coin, though. Can't wait to see a picture - but don't rush it. It took me so long just to figure the darn thing out and my photo ended up not even showing up properly! |

What site are you using? I tried Imageshack because it seemed the easiest, but maybe not.
Edit: Try this for starters. You must be logged in to see this link.

I'm just trying to copy and past the file from the memory stick in my camera. Do I need to post the image to a website first? |

Oh, I see. Do you have a Mac or PC? Yes, you have to download the image to one of those sites first, unfortunately. It would make it a lot easier if we could drag from the desktop. |

Posting photos is easy, just copy the photos web address, past it in your post, highlight the address and press the "image" button.

Kirkland I opened a "flickr" account and copied the picture images. The link you provided : "You must be logged in to see this link." was spot-on for instructions. The challenge was "resizing" to "medium" so the photo didn't take up the whole "Realcent" text box when I previewed the post before sending it.
Too bad you can't just cut'n'paste the image from the memory stick......;) |

Test.
Oh good! It worked! Albeit a tad too large. Sorry! Yes, I know. I need to clean up my coin area. It's a mess in there. That's what I get for encasing every common date Wheat Penny in cardboard 2X2's. Somebody stop me! |

I do buy quite a few in large quantities, over time from my local coin shops. The most expensive for each is 6 cents, and the least is 2 cents. Most of those you see in the picture are the 2 cent ones! |

Wow, you have a lot of wheats! Do you encase every wheat in a 2x2? I bought a box of plastic tubes with 60 plastic tubes, and I keep the wheat pennies sorted by year in the tubes. Once I fill a tube I roll the pennies and put them in my wheat box. I got the tubes for less than $0.30 each. If you tried that it would take up less space and would save you money! Just an idea |

I probably should, you know. However, I can't start doing that now that I've done this. There's no way I am going to be able to disassemble all those staples!
