Is the magic number $10K? Anything over must be declared? Not sure if it's any different with coin (that would be a heavy load to hide in the wheel well). |

Did this for about 6 months....about 30 crossings.....don't bother for the .999Ni play....it is dead - too many commercial/serious sorters. Copper is still reasonable...but dropping fast...about 35% a few weeks ago.
US Customs gets pretty curious why one has $3000 in change....of the 30 time through customs...I got he big search/detainment 3 times. In the end, they let me go, no problem...held me for about 1 hour one time....it just strikes customs as very odd behavior....
I'm in Michigan....going to Windsor and Sarnia.

Suppose you just hid the nickel coins in the seat cushions?
Customs officials will think you are just sloppy with your pocket change.
(Best not to do this with too much in coins, maybe $10.00 in Canadian 5¢ coins tucked in/around the cushions.)

There's a good chance I'll be flying to Canada (Toronto area) some time soon, and I'll try to hit some banks while there. Is it reasonable to expect banks to exchange cash for coin if I'm a non-account holding Yankee? Nickels are tapped out, so I hear, and I'm obviously going to hit the pennies, but do you think it's worth it to try dimes and halves? Or even loonies or toonies, for that matter? Any numismatic/money faux pas I ought to avoid? I've heard that Canadian coin and banking parlance is ever-so slightly different.
Also, I'll be flying. TSA is no fun, of course. Any adivce regarding border crossing? I've flown to Europe several times carrying precious metals, and never had a problem, but I think that was because no one had a clue what I was carrying. A large amount of regularly circulating coins, on the other hand, might make things more interesting. Any idea on what to expect, and how to avoid a TSA confrontation while still keeping everything legal?
I know, lotsa questions. But I'm all ears.

You can usually buy coins at banks around toronto with no account, but occaisionally you'll hear there is a policy against coins for non-customers if you ask for a lot at once. I think it's more a matter of the teller being lazy and inventing a policy off the top of their head than anything else. I haven't been sorting a lot lately but when I do sort nickels I still find a fair number of the good ones, not quite the 25% I got when I started sorting but still worth my while for the most part. |
