I have seen a few lots of foreign silver do well in the auction section and I think that is great - especially since I might sell some in a similar fashion someday But I wanted to list some of the pros and cons from an investment standpoint.
Pros: -Can often be had at or below spot price -Often have numismatic value beyond the bullion value -If the silver price collapses, its better to have a cool-looking and possibly rare coin than a lump of Englehard - like Morgans in the 1990s. -Its fun to have an exotic or varied collection
Cons: -Often have weird purity levels like 0.640, 0.720, etc. making them harder to sell to dealers -Have less recognition by common people -If silver spikes high enough, it won't make any difference if they are numismatic or not -Its harder to track how much silver you have

Is that truly a con..? Otherwise an accurate observation that I do agree with.
A lot of older coins from S. America, Mexico and Cuba, have the weight and fineness struck right on the coin. Hard to argue with that.

I've been doing my best to get in on the foreign coin sale here.
I rank order you pro's as follows:
-Its fun to have an exotic or varied collection -Can often be had at or below spot price -If the silver price collapses, its better to have a cool-looking and possibly rare coin than a lump of Englehard - like Morgans in the 1990s.
None of the con's listed bother me. |

Yes indeed. I put it this way: there are THOUSANDS of types of silver coins, in all sizes, purities, ages, rarities, designs... there is much history and mystery alike. From huge proof crowns to tiny bent up culls. World silver is way cool. Just like this guy: |

I've been bitten by the World Ag Bug...It's the hunt for coins below spot that is so compelling.

I would stay with Mexico and Canada coins. I have both. I would do other silver coin only if way below spot. |

I think European silver coins are usually have more beautiful designs. With coin collecting, sometimes you want to go beyond just the silver content. Sometimes you want to buy something for the pure beauty and history |

AM,
Thanks for the thread. I posted a topic last week asking about the value of foreign silver to spot, because ai wanted to know what others think. I like foreign silver. I have found several pieces in the junk bins and gotten it way below spot. I like that. |
