Hey Guys I though It would be Neat to know how many pennies are getting searched each week accross the nation? I Have 1000 comming in early next week. I just got my ryedale like 5 days ago.
This way Buy Knowing this we could put a better estimation on The Copper cent "In the wild"

1000 coins OR $1000??
If dollars, that new bank job of yours must pay pretty good cause your going to need to buy a new truck to haul all those boxes.
Good luck, Dan |

I think he means 1000 boxes :)
To get an idea of how much people are hoarding I would check out the "Sorting Percentages and Buying Reports" threads and the "What Level Hoarder Are You Poll"
You must be logged in to see this link.
There is a huge range of hoarders on the forum...from like sorting $5.00 a week to $1,200.00. But really the numbers posted by active members on this forum are pretty small (say $5,000 a week total) compared to the $1,500,000,000 pennies in circulation.
If this people on this board were the only ones sorting pennies, it would take us 5,769.23 years to sort all the pennies currently out there and that is assuming that we don't accidently sort the same penny more than once.
Of course, the big question that nobody knows is how many penny sorters are out there that don't post on this board? Does this board represent 10% or 1% or 1/100% of all sorters out there?
If we represent 10% would be 576.9 years If 1% would be 57.7 years If .1% would be 5.8 years If .01% would be .6 years
Or if you prefer, a thousand sorters sorting $1000 in pennies a week using rydale machines would sort every penny in 28.9 years. I don't think we are close to that yet.
If I had to guess, I would say we are currently at the 58+ years level with this board representing 1% or more of all sorting. Of course, the amount of sorting going on could literally explode overnight given the right psychological trigger...whatever that might be.

I'm still new to large-scale sorting, but I try to search about 1 box per day---maybe take the weekend off. Maybe not. Depends on how much cash I have tied up in halves.

It varies for me depending on how busy I am with other things. Usually I sort between 20 and 100 boxes per week.. averaging about 40 boxes per week. My percentages are lower than a lot of you other guys so I have to sort more.
This is my incoming pile.. it is about a 1-2 week supply.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

| I only sort $25 - $50 weekly. I expect it will increase in the coming weeks. |

In the last two weeks (only been doing it that long) I have gone thru $475 in cents and still have 3 unopened boxes. I mostly get customer rolls but if a bank is out I will ask for boxes.
I now have 3 half dollar bank boxes full of CU and several cloth bags of zincs waiting to count and return. Won't know my percentages till both are counted, but it looks good.
One big problem is I have to carry all the rejects back to my car and into my banks. Ordinarliy no problem but I have a hernia surgery scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving. This is a re-do from a year and a half ago. Waaaaaa, no turkey and no coin hunting for a while. |

Dan, If I remember correctly you aren't supposed to lift anything or pull anything when waiting for that operation. One of the best investments you can make after a Ryedale machine is a cart to roll the coins in and out of the bank with. You just roll on in and say "Fill er up!" Much easier on the spine and everything else. Better stockpile a few extra boxes before then like my little stack pictured above. That stack is actually bigger now.. I need to post an updated pic. Maybe your wife can hand you one roll at a time to sort. Otherwise you will just be hanging out in front of the computer reading about the rest of your buddies merrily sorting away.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I told the doc that the heaviest thing I lift is 25 lbs. Didn't tell him it was a box of coins. He didn't seem to think that was too much. I always watch myself and take it easy so carrying all those boxes does not hurt. I do have to make a lot of trips to my car and up the stairs.
I was thinking of using a heavy duty set of luggage wheels I have just for use between the bank and the car. |
