I found a 1916 Edward VII coin in the junk bin. It looks like a British 1/2 sovereign with the horse on the back. However, it is copper in appearance.
I've been looking through my world coin book and cant find it. Any help?

Weird. Edward VII died in 1910, so coins from 1916 would have George V. Is it the size of a half sovereign? |

Yeah it is because I have a couple of verified sovereigns. It seems too detailed to be a fake coin but I am not really sure. It is in a bezel for a necklace |

I have a model half farthing that is from a year not in the books. It's from a coronation year though; a lot of collector stuff was made in coronation years. This is puzzling to me. Can you post a pic? |

Is the bezel removable? Could you weigh it? |

No it is pretty much a permanent part of the coin now. What did those letters tell you? |

Well, it tells me that it's what it should be for a real coin. Except for RFX which should be REX. I was assuming that was a typo. I have some examples of British "play" money that uses a mixture of some of the genuine lettering plus some to identify the maker, or just gibberish. Like this guinea replica game token:
W.C.B. ET. CO. = the name of the company that made this. One such company was Bancroft Brothers. I don't remember what this one stands for. DG. I. REX. F.D. = a close imitation of the actual Latin abbreviation lettering. B.I.R.M. = made in Birmingham. |

So far I don't know. So I would go with the most obvious so far: I would guess it's a copper replica of a half sovereign. Purposely "muled" so that the sides didn't match up, so that it couldn't be plated in something gold and passed of as authentic. |

One more question. Is there a mint mark on the ground line above the center of the date? |

That makes sense. And I would never be so lucky as to find gold in the junk foreign bin :) |

It looks like 1916; I know a guy who has an ebay store that sometimes sells coins. Maybe I'll take it to him to see if he has an opinion on it. That is what I love about the junk bin that you always find cool things. Even if they aren't worth much researching them can be a good learning experience. |

This is a VERY cool coin. If I found this in a junk bin, I would be VERY happy. |

I still have it; would you really want a replica coin? He said you can tell its not the authentic coin because the reeding on the edges is not as good as the real thing. |
