Sorry for the delay in getting back with ya'll but we have been on quite a wild ride down here in New Orleans! WHO DAT! Lol....
We love the Ryedale machine.. it works great with just an occasional jam which is easily fixed. My son has gone through 3of his buckets. The first was 49% copper, second 37% and the third was 42%
We have not had the time to sort through the coppers yet to look for wheats or IH's.
I purchased 2 boxes of pennies at the bank yesterday and ran one through so far. I wanted to get an idea of how much copper there is in the bank boxes. Just eyeballing it, it looks between 20-25%.
Question...Should I be keeping any 2009 pennies? I'm guessing these are the "Log Cabins" because most of them have log cabins on the back
Thanks! and we will report what we find when we go through the coppers.

Great percentages on those buckets, SouthernBelle! An average box is around 20% for me, but sometimes less. If you want to, keep the 2009 Pennies, especially those in mint condition. You can assemble a roll of these and try for luck on eBay. I can't believe what some people are willing to pay for them! You and your son enjoy your searches, and I'm glad that your team one the SuperBowl! Kirkland |

Hi and welcome.
hold the 2009 pennies? They do carry a premium if they are in AU or BU condition. Though a lot of people here are holding every '09 cent they find. If you can spare the cents why not do it. The best is when you find a bank box of all '09 cents. I'm sure these are still making their way into circulation.
Secondly and in my opinion more importantly:
I make a point to hand search through the zinc rejects. Lots of times you'll find the IH's wheats and other copper cents that where rejected. |
Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.

SouthernBelle... when you first came online awhile back and mentioned your son inherited all those buckets, I knew you would have good percentages. I was right. Great numbers. Your boxes are a little bit better than mine here in district 12 (18-20 percent). What fed district are you in? I'm trying to compile statistics. |

I'm in district 6 I'm guessing... acccording to your map. I only did the first box (it takes me forever to unroll them). I'll do another one later today so we can get a better idea. I also ordered 4 more boxes from the bank.
Thanks Kirkland! We are STILL in SHOCK over the win... :o)
Job... I guess we'll keep the 2009's for now. Maybe oneday we can sell them..although I don't know why people would want them since they are not copper... maybe just because the backs are different??

I would only keep unopened 2009 (and 2010) ROLLS. Turn loose ones back in.
If you get an box of 2009 rolls from the bank (NF String boxes with the holes) you can easily sell the unopened box on eBay for $75 and upward - sometimes WAY upward. Folks here can help you with the shipping details.

| Glad that ryedale is working great for you. I would some of the 2009 but wouldn't get to carried away. At this rate you will get to the one ton club. |

SB... be careful not to return the zincs until you scan them for early wheaties (pre-1944). The metals composition was different and the Ryedale kicks them into the zinc discards pile. Same with the indian heads. You'll miss the best stuff if you don't look. There's usually a huge color differential, so you don't have to inspect them individually. |

Thanks.. I was confused as to why the ryedale would kick those out.. now I know ;)
El Dee... I'm going to put together the boards like you said.. I think that would be the easiest way to inspect the keepers and maybe the others as well.
Thanks for the suggestions! |

Hey Southernbelle, Good to hear from you again. Be sure to let us know, if you find anything rare. All those pennies with such high copper percentages should get you some key dates.
Did you know a 1943 copper penny is worth $20,000. You never know.
Check this out to discover some rarities to look for.

| I'm keeping all 2009's because I haven't gotten more than 4 rolls worth from circulation yet. I had 3 boxes of logs and sold them, but after that I haven't seen a new box this year. I doubt they'll be worth anything, but what the heck. |

Wow! $20K? OK, I've got that year memorized!
Thanks for the link..any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking we'll start looking for key dates once Mardi Gras is over. Things are pretty hectic right now.
We got 22% copper from box #2 last night. Found a decent amount of those log cabins again. We now have half a jar full.
Question... Why do some of the backs have the log cabin and some do not? Any reason? |

Also, it would be wise to look through the zinc pile for error coins. I recently found a zinc penny without the copper coating and one blank planchet zinc penny. These are not worth more than 2 to 3 dollars, but it is nice to keep them separate. It is possible that you'll find a 1943 Steel Penny, but the $20K one to look for is the copper variety. I think there are only 14 or so known to exist, but watch out for counterfeits! Fake copper 1943 pennies will stick to a magnet, because the fakers will have plated a steel penny with copper coating. The Log Cabin reverse 2009 pennies were just one of four reverse designs for the 2009 penny. The other three show Lincoln reading on a log, Lincoln by the Illinois capitol building, and Lincoln by the under-construction US Capitol building. Enjoy! Kirkland |
