I am new here, I was just wondering how many boxes of pennies you guys pick up at the bank at a time and how many boxes you return at a time without upsetting people at the bank? Also I’m wondering do you guys use a cart to pick the pennies up and drop them off?

| Welcome! I am not quite the level of some of the Realcenters on here, but I usually buy one to three boxes a day, and maybe some loose rolls too. Dumping is what holds me back. I still don't have a very good situation with my dumping. It is a horrible thing to go through. |

| I try to get aa bag or two per week. Dumping is no problem for me. I'm trying to do more this year as I feel this may be the last good year before changes in the penny. |

| I buy all the bags they have at 2 Credit Unions. I also order several hundred in boxes. I also have a few that call when they have CWR's that they want to get rid of. Getting pennies has never been a problem. Now getting rid of them can be a challenge |

Standard pickup for me is 24 boxes at each of several banks. A cart is one of the best investments you can make if you are going to do serious volume. Mine is a flat dolly cart with fold down handle and a 660 lb. capacity. For returns I spread them around to several dump banks.. usually never more than $200 at a time. 4 bags are easy to carry without a cart.. and the other dump banks like my machine rolled boxes at about 4-6 boxes per time. I learned the hard way about dumping too many in one location. I got cut off from my main dump bank after returning 60 bags in one week using my squeeky wheeled cart.. 12 bags every day. I can't imagine why they cut me off. Spread your dumps around. |

| New to forum, but been sorting for a couple years. I have one pick up bank that lets me buy $50.00 bags from their counter--I get the nickels too. I have dump bank in another town where I bring the zincos to deposit. I bring them loose in canvas mint bags, but make sure they weigh less than 20# so the girls can handle them. I only use the one pick up bank so I'm limited to whatever they have coming in--usually 4-6 bags per month. I hand sort and can run through a bag easily in two evenings of watching TV. |

| HCBTT, 60 bags in one week. I can't believe you got them to take 12 2 days in a row. Being called in on the carpet is never a good thing when you are dumping. |

| I wish the banks had a loading dock that I could back my truck up and fill the box up. |

lol.. yeah, this was in the early days when I was still learning. 12 bags was my standard dump amount.. and when I started cranking up the volume I just started dumping every day without even thinking I might want to spread it around a bit more. I was definately pushing the envelope on this one. This is how we learn. |

Nah.. I like the monikier. It is sometimes just luck. I am always nice to Bank Tellers. Yesterday I had another new one offer to order bank boxes for me. She suggested it. We are just starting out with 2 boxes a week, but it's a start. I think there is some saying about a camel getting his nose under the edge of the tent. She is going to be getting some chocolate soon. Usually only 1 teller takes care of the coin ordering.. that is the one you want to be even nicer too. But always be nice to all of them.. this responsibility is often shifted over time. It's great when a teller you have a good relationship with becomes the one responsible for coin ordering. |

HCBTT, why don't you just contract with the Fed. You do enough volume that they would probably open up a branch right next door to your house!
I am pleased to say that I am slowly making headway with the tellers at my bank. I went in for my $200 pick-up, and they offered me $300 without needing to ask.
The bad news is, I set up my sorting station in the garage, which is not heated. I have found that opening 40 degree rolls of pennies is not fun, and I don't like the loss of dexterity with gloves. So I am hoarding unopened boxes of unsorted cents right now. My Ryedale will soon be staring at $2000 of unsorted pennies. I may have to talk to slickeast about making extra hopper space before long.

I would like to have a direct deal with the FED, but I don't think they would deliver.
I set my sorting operation up out in the garage too. Insulated and sheetrocked it. It hardly ever gets down to 40 out here.. but I have heaters out there if it ever does.
A possible solution: Find some space in the bottom of a closet or something to use as a "warming zone." You can store a day's worth of pennies in there. Just open them and dump in a bucket while you are watching TV or on your computer. Then you can run them out to the garage for quick processing, or since the Ryedale is portable, just sneak it into the house and do some stealth sorting. |

Hey two cents. I made a couple extra hoppers for my one machine.
Here's what you do. Get a plastic food bucket. They would typically hold pretzels or animal crackers. CAREFULLY, cut the bottom out and put the top of the bucket into the hopper. You might want to check that it fits the hopper first. But now for me i use one bucket on top of the hopper and i can easily load over $70 dollars in one sitting.
Downside is a jam or bad penny in the hopper means you need to shovel the bucket out. Just a thought for your $2k sort coming up.
I also have no advice for your hands being cold. Good luck. |

Hi Twocents, Try making a pair of close-fitting gloves with the fingertips cut off. Not the whole finger; gotta keep those finger joints warm. I have neoprene sailing gloves that are made for your conditions, but I'm sure a cheaper home-hacked solution would at least help.

I sort in the house. Usually late at night when everyone else is upstairs. Or I do it when the wife is gone and kids are using their time on the Wii.
If the wife takes the kids somewhere, I sneak out the Ryedale. 1. It doesn't bother anyone. 2. My wife knows my goal is to sort $100 per week. If she is gone and I sort an extra $100, I'm further ahead.
Isn't that one of the signs of addiction, when you try to hide it?? |

I went to a new branch and now they have set me up a standing order for $100/wk. I asked for pennies, and someone said "oh, you are like the half dollar guy who comes in. I guess you will be our penny guy. How much do you want?" I asked for $100, and the teller said I will call you when they come in. When I picked up the $100, she offered "Do you want another $100 next week?"
Music to my ears. Now my goal is to get this arrangement at 5 banks. |
