I know, I know, You should never clean pennies because it ruins there value.....but, what if they are so dirty that the date is bearly readable if at all, they obviously are not worth anything as they are so why not clean them?

I've tried it. It's actually pretty fun to do it on a hot day. If they are just mildly dirty you can use Salt and vinegar in a container to shake the mixture and the coins get shiny quickly. The dirtier the coin the longer it takes and salt and vinegar may not be enough to clean them.
I would say don't do it, because it's an unecessary cost to pay & the time required to salvage some aweful looking pennies. |

I was thinking that a cleaned 1909Svdb is worth more than one that you dont know is one....I have about 200 wheats that I cannot read the date on and I am dabbling with the idea of cleaning them....They are worth only one cent right now, cleaned they still will be worth one cent, possibly more if they are a key date. I was going to try lemon juice. |

Go to google.com, and look for tips for cleaning coins. You may find lemon juice works, some people use ketchup, or even hot sauce. If the coins have a lot of the green gunk, I will stress that a majority of these may not do the trick.
In those particular cases i would reference Bman's choice, and use salt & vinegar with gravel... |

I too think a cleaned coin is worth more than coin that is so dirty it is unidentifiable.
I found a Liberty nickel metal detecting that was so green a corroded it wasn't even spendable. I gave it too my nephew, he soaked it in olive oil for 8 months. It came out decent looking, all things condidered. It is probably only worth 5¢, but at least it is spendable and not an eye sore.

| Olive oil... I've not tried that. But eight months in salt and vinegar or baking soda and water should have cleared that coin up proper. |

I thought such a method would be effective. Glad to hear that it's successful for you. BTW, any idea what a cheap tumbler goes for these days? |

| I got my last tumbler at Michael's (I think it's a national arts & crafts store chain) for about $28. It's small, it's plastic but it has been going strong for about 3 years. (Used to clean my metal detecting clad) |
