I recently scrapped a central A/C unit and 8 refrigerators. Part of the process to scrap them is to remove the compressor and drain the oil. I read somewhere that there is quite a bit of copper on the inside of these compressors. I have already scrapped the tin, but have set these compressors aside to drain them. Is there a bunch of copper inside of them, and is it worth the effort to take them apart? I see the casings are pretty thick steel, and can imagine them would not be easy to take apart.
I was able to get one of my larger compressor casing cut in half finally, and saw from all the copper wiring in the motor it would be worth taking them apart. A couple of questions. After removing the motor with all the copper wire, is there anything else in the compressor that is worth removing? Also, I used a grinder and a hacksaw to split the casing. Is there any other hand tools that would make the job easier to split the casing?
