We have a thread about it over at the Economic and business forum. In a nutshell I believe it is tied to the drop in the stock market and a stronger dollar due to Europe's troubles.

Is everyone buying AG now or waiting for it to fall further? Looks like some cheap silver is to be had but its not going to last long at the big sellers at these prices.

I am kind of surprised by the drop off. I guess the Euro is sinking because of the worries about Spain and Greece right? Is that playing a role? You would think though that this would be bullish for precious metals if these countries get in big trouble.

I'm buying! As bad as the dollar is, the Euro looks worse. Greece and Spain are close to defaulting now because they can't print their own currency. Our states are in the same position; when CA defaults the metals will be back up.

So you think silver will drop more? If the dollar is gaining strength partly because of the weakening of the Euro due to all the concerns with Greece, Spain, and Portugal, does it really mean the dollar is legitimately stronger? Not really in my view.

The problem is where else are you going to go if Europe is in trouble. The dollar isnt that great but the panic to drop the euro is causing it to surge. Hence PM price drops. By the time this thing settles out, you will have 2 worthless fiats and strong PM's.

Those dollar figures are against a basket of currencies, all of which are inflating at differing rates. To say the dollar is up just means its slope of descent into worthlessness is more gradual. Kitco now separates price action in these terms:
-----
Gold Price Change due to Strengthening of US Dollar -4.50
Gold Price Change due to Predominant Buying +5.80
Gold Price: Total Change +1.30
-----
That shows you where the action is. People are buying PM's, that's why the premiums are going up again. January 2010 ASE production exceed total 1996 ASE sales. The wise are securing their positions in physical assets.

Dakota,

You have the right idea ... "the better of the two evils" ... keep your silver and take this opportunity to stock up while you can, that's how I see it!

You'll probably see me on A&E's Hoarders for silver hoarding someday.

No doubt a time to buy. If it goes lower buy more. Buying on these dips, especially when they stick over the weekends, gives you the opportunity to shop around for the best deals at local dealers...
