Macomb police find counterfeit coins.
Wednesday, October 3, 2007
MACOMB - Macomb police are investigating the passing of four counterfeit coins at a Macomb restaurant recently.
Police said Tuesday that four $1 gold-colored coins were passed at the McDonald's restaurant on East Jackson Street. The coins had the faces of U.S. Presidents George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison on them. Police said they were not easily identifiable as counterfeit, and this is the first time they remember seeing fake coins instead of bills. *The coins appeared to have come from a collector's proof set. Police said the fake coins were discovered by a local bank because the $1 James Madison coin has not yet been released to the public.

There is an update to this story.
U.S. Secret Service takes over counterfeit coin case

Friday, October 5, 2007
MACOMB - The investigation of four gold-colored coins believed to be counterfeit will be turned over to the U.S. Secret Service.
Macomb police said a teenage male passed the four $1 coins at the McDonald's restaurant on East Jackson Street. The teen's mother has reimbursed the store, and no arrests will be made as a result of the case. Police said the teen received the coins as a gift in a collector's set. It is believed the coins in the proof set are not actually legal tender. Officers said markings missing on the coins made them appear counterfeit, such as three connected hash marks. The lettering on the sides of the coin is also too close together. Police said the teenager didn't know the coins could not be spent. The coins had the faces of presidents George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Madison coin was identified as suspicious by a local bank because that coin has not yet been released to the public.

"Police said the teenager didn't know the coins could not be spent."
In other words, proof coins are not real coins, and for that matter, not real money?!?!?!?!
Somebody out there, please, Please, PLEASE email this story (and this realization that proofs are not coins or real money per the gub'ment) to the Liberty Dollar supporters/issuers. Let them use the government's own arguement against them.

| Sounds to me more like the bank and police didn't realize proofs are legal tender and the counterfeit theory was invented to cover their incompetence.. Why would anyone go to the trouble of counterfeiting even one of those coins from the 14.95 gift set, let alone four different ones? Makes no sense. |

Come to think of it, I found one while sorting pennies.

If the story is true, sounds like it is, I would think the police after many phone calls would be trying to find an easy way out. Of course I can really understand what they are going through. I was going to try to be one of those that spends those new baby dollars. I no longer will ever do that again. At a restaurant I left several of them on the table for a tip. The waitress said loudly as I walked away, "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table"
