Here's a question for you numismatic types out there in Realcentia: Yesterday I bought 4 rolls plus two boxes of halves. The rolls were a bust. In the first box I found two 40%ers. (Not really enough to make the whole effort worth it, to me.) However, I also found quite a few nice bright and shiny post-64 halves. I think they may be what you collectors call BU. Would these be worth saving for collectors or should I just spend/redeem them? thx. -james

Personally, I think they tie up too much money to keep them. As dakota stated, one of each mint and year would be all I would keep. Also if you are searching for silver you don't want all your money tied up in non-silvers. Just recycle them and order more boxes. Some boxes are great, some horrible. You really have to stick with it so you can get some of the good ones...

It depends on the year. In 1982 and 1983 there were no mint sets issued so a BU in those dates is worth saving (they have to be truly BU though). Grey Sheet bid on BU rolls of 1982 is P - $75 & D - $62...the GS bid on BU rolls of 1983 is P - $60 & D - $95. I once found at a bank 5 rolls of BU 1983-D halves someone had turned in...it took awhile but eventually I sold or traded all 5...one dealer gave me $75 for 1 roll; another dealer gave me $40 for 1 roll and my happiest trade was one dealer traded a 10oz silver bar for the other 3 rolls. The demand for half rolls is not very great however, so a dealer would only be interested if they have a customer looking for a roll or you give a price low enough that they will be content to sit on them for awhile. Generally though I just usually return most other clad dates (unless it's an extremely nice specimin) back into the wild except of course for the 87's and post 2001's.

I agree with EZ. As much as I admire and sometimes want to keep the AU++ coins bordering on MS I just don't allow myself to do so. You can tie up a considerable amount of your CRH'ing capital that way. That valuable capital can go towards buying more rolls to look for what we are really searching for...SILVER. The more of those AU-BU coins you keep, the more $$$ you will need to be seeding into your CRH'ing fund. Just not worth it in my opin.

I am building a set of dates and mint marks, after that it will need to be a remarkable coin for me to keep it.

Thank you all. I just finished going through my first 4 rolls of halves followed by two boxes. All in all, I wound up with one each '64, '67, '68, '69 plus a proof '86S. As for my pile of potentials (about which I started this thread) there are quite a number of really nice coins of various years but mostly '97. There must have been a few news rolls that got opened and thrown into the mix. I may see if there are enough of them to make a roll. If so, I may keep a roll just for giggles. The rest I guess I will send back. Not sure that I will order any more boxes. Pennies seem to be a better investment (of capital and of time). I am waiting on a bag of halves to fill up at a pair of local credit unions. That is the source of most of coins. They have the machine for customers...er, I mean, members... to dump coins into. Both institutions would rather sell the coins to me than have to pay Loomis to pick it up. So I am really anxious to get at those halves but the boxes overall were a disappointment. I may try once more but not sure, yet. Thanks, again.
