didn't want to hijack the other thread, but can someone explain to me the logic behind paying numismatic premiums for private mint rounds? For example, engleheart prospectors command a premium nearly equal to U.S. mint ASE's. I don't get it.

sort of related, I recently came across these:

nice looking rounds, but I wouldn't pay more than a buck over spot for them right now. if you are interested, wexford is offering them for a buck over min 500. You must be logged in to see this link.

Buying:
Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00
copper cents at 1.3X
wheat pennies at 3X

You pay for the ease of recoginition. More people know what a ASE is than a X-mas round or something. They know thats its an ounce of silver rather than having to look for it on the X-mas round.

I like the prospectors but don't pay the $2 premium for them! I buy them as close to spot as I can.

I agree with you though and don't like to pay the premiums. If I have a choice to buy a name brand for $2 over or a common marked generic I would buy the generic everytime.
