From the same bank that I found the unusual 2001 Canadian dime, I now find a 1982 Canadian nickel that is about the thickness/thinness of a dime and it weighs about 2.6 - 2.7 grams.

I tried to find a website that would give me some info on this nickel. What I could find said:

-From 1982 to 1998 it becomes 75% copper and 25% nickel with a weight of 4.60 grams.

It also mentions this:

some off-metal transitional error

What would that be???

This is the website I found for info on this nickel.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it is the thickness of a dime you have a really good error coin. I'd take it to a coin dealer for an estimate.
A transition metal error, for a 1982 nickel would likely be a pure Ni nickel (left over pure Ni blank).

Thanks. I am keeping my fingers, ummm better make that my toes crossed so I can still sort coins.

I am hoping to see an error expert at an upcoming show. However, I don't know if he is very familiar with foreign coins. I can hope he is, though. The local coin shops don't do much with error coins at all. Mainly they deal in bullion.

I'll keep everyone posted on this nickel and on the Canadian dime, as well.

Either way, I find it really intriguing that I would find two error coins, or at least possible error coins, both from Canada and in back to back days of searching. Considering the slim amount of coins I search to begin with, I am amazed.

Is the nickel magnetic? If the blank was made from a sheet of metal intended for dimes at that time, it would make sense if it was .999 nickel.

Magnet does NOT stick to the coin. It does to the 2001 dime I found that may also be an error. See other topic I started on that find.

Didn't the RCM mint coins for other countries during that time frame? My thinking is that it may have been struck on a blank intended for another country's coinage.

I was looking at it again last night while showing Mr. PTP and while talking with my brother on the phone about it. The details on the coin are extremely sharp. Especially considering it is a 1982 nickel.

Anyone know of any websites dealing with error Canadian coins?

Thanks again for any assistance.

The RCM has long made coins for many countries. On the tour they claimed 40% of the world is using coins made in Winnipeg. Try calling these guys:

Here's a page with weights etc for foreign coins/planchets made by the rcm at different times: You must be logged in to see this link. On the same site there is a page on $2 wrong planchet errors with value estimates: You must be logged in to see this link.

You could also try asking in the canadian error section at the coin community forums: You must be logged in to see this link.

Any more information on this? The Bangladesh Twenty-Five Poisha was made in Canadada around that time, 2.7 grams stainless steel so possibly non-magnetic. Another possibility I came across was either the New Zealand or Australian 5 cent but they're a bit heavy, 2.83 - 2.8 g copper nickel.

I was able to attend a coin club meeting last night where I had the nickel looked at by the guy who is a coin expert; he's the one that helped me verify my 1999 Wide AM penny.

Unfortunately, he isn't too knowledgeable in foreign coins but he requested permission to hang on to it to either talk with a guy who is or else to send the coin to this other expert. So, I agreed.

So, the jury is still out on this nickel.

Thanks again for all assistance and info.

Update on nickel:

Good news and bad news.

The good news is that after the second expert looked at my nickel he deemed it to be a "genuine error".

Bad news is, still don't know exactly what type of error. His opinion is it could have been struck on another country's planchet but finding one that meets its exact specifications will be difficult. He also said it could possibly be "struck on a planchet punched out of rolled-thin stock". I'm not familiar with this type of error.

It weighs 2.7 grams. It has a thickness of 1.4 mm and its diameter is 20.7 mm.

So, the mystery continues.

Thanks, guys. I'm pretty excited about having found it. Just wish I could figure out, or someone could, exactly what type of error it is and how much it could be worth.

Still bugging me about it though is where could that nickel have been for 27 - 28 years and no one else notice it wasn't right??? IT stuck out like a sore thumb as soon as I spread the roll of nickels out in my hand.
