I was wondering if anyone could drop some wisdom on me. I need to know if I got a good deal from a guy I met.
I bought 65 rolls of wheaties from the 40's to 1958. It cost me $63.00, which comes out to about 97 cents per roll.
The copper value alone is $80.48. He told me he has 1000's more if I was interested. Do I bite? Any information would be great! Thanks.

Rolls of 40-50s wheats on Ebay go for about $1.50ea per roll and up when buy in qty if thats of any help. Mostly sold as bags of 5000 coins ($50), and go for a minimum of $150-$165 usually ($1.50-$1.65 per roll). So, I think you are covered, even if you wanted to resell on Ebay to at least break even on the deal in worst case scenerio. Like you stated you are covered as well on the current copper value as well. Hold them until at least 2009 when the penny is due for a makeover by the mint as might get a price spike in the wheaties. | I agree. I don't see how you can lose on this deal. As long as you have some familiarity with E-Bay and don't mind spending a little time managing an auction or two, you can get your money back and probably more anytime that you want. |

So the rolls usually go for about $1.50 each on eBay, I looked on there, and it seems like everyone charges like $2.50 for shipping. So you would really end up paying like $4.00 for a roll.
I ended up paying less then a dollar a roll delivered. I am going to wipe this guy out. Buy up every last roll he has at this price! |

I think you got a great deal! I pay $1.50 a roll, so if you decide you want to sell a bunch of them let me know. Shipping is the main consideration. It costs a couple of bucks to ship a roll first class, but you can ship a bag or a bag and a half in a Priority Flat Rate box for only $9.95 and a bunch of good tape.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Hey don't forget to look for rarities!
The 1955 is the famous doubled die coin (the front of the cent looks like it was stamped twice, a double stamp of the year) but there were a few 1955 that were mildly overstamped, a little hard to see unless you look for it. While a mildly double die 1955 isn't worth as much as an obvious double stamp, it could go for a dollar or two or three to a collector who wants an affordable error coin for their collecion.
Also be on the lookout for- 1958 Doubled die reverse
1946S S over D
1944D D over S
1956D D some have a "shadow" or a faint imprint of where the D should have gone (another overlooked error.)
Non-erros to keep an eye out for-
1955 S, 1949 S, (sell for 20¢ in Very fine condition) 1954 (low mintage for a Philadelphia Mint penny)
Have fun searching.
