hi everyone i just signed up here. i have been lurking around for about 6 months now and i am active on the other coin roll board. i am from alabama and i have been called a monster hunter. i currently search 15K in halves a week and i throw in some boxes of dimes in between. i have been doing this volume now for a little over a year. this board is a little different than the tnet board so i will be trying to get used to it. i will also start posting my finds here as well. i am sure there are some guys here that are on the other board as well.

Silvercopper...welcome!

Were you doing coin roll searching for long before you ramped up to the level you are at now, which I believe I read that you have been at for about a year or so?

Do you search pennies or nickels, as well?

Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum silvercopper. Be sure to post your amount searched and finds in the Halves section so they can keep track of your total finds and give you a Silver Searcher Score. I am curious how you manage to source and dump 30 boxes a week. I assume you are dumping into lobby coin counting machines.. but at that level they sometimes want to cut you off.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

15k, that is impressive. 6k is the most I have done in a week. I hope you are getting loose in bags. Unrolling that many would be a nightmare.

I look forward to seeing your results in the Half hunting thread.

Welcome, silvercopper! Sounds like you go through a large number of coins so it'll be nice to hear about your finds. Don't loose your credibility by posting too much like I have!

Welcome to RC. If you don't mind, what part of Alabama are you working out of? I'm in Talladega. I do no where near the quantity you do, but it would still be nice to know where to stay out of. Again, glad to have you.

let me try to answer all the questions. first of all i have 2 dump banks. my main dump bank has several branches in 6 cities in 2 states. it has been a love-hate relationship at best with them. they love to hate me. i was using their coincounters for about 4 months when they cut me off and said i had to bring in rolls. i said ok and i brought them 5K in rolls at lunch when there was only 2 tellers on the line. i thought the manager was going to have a heart attack. 45 minutes later they agreed to give me the bags and i fill them with 1K each and bring them in. this arrangement worked about 8 months when the manager said i was going to have to start buying my own bags from them at about 60.00 a case and pay a fee of 3.00 for each bag i bring in. that is when i got my 2nd dump bank. my 2nd dump bank provides the bags and don't charge a fee. i was honest with the 2nd bank's manager upfront and told her what i was doing. i have been dumping about 6K a week with them and have been trying to start off slow. so far with the 2nd bank it has been problem free. i am still using the 1st one too. they have tried everything short of closing my account to get rid of me. dumping is the worst part of this hobby. i have 3 supply banks. one is supplied by loomis, one by garda, and the other is supplied by brinks. both of my dump banks are supplied by brinks.
all of my supply banks provide me with boxes of rolled coins, and bags are not available to me in my area.
i am from valley alabama which is about 100 miles north of montgomery alabama and 100 miles south of atlanta georgia. mcprice i spoke to you not long ago by pm on the tnet board.
in the past year i have done some road trips but most of my searching is limited to boxes due to the competition in the area. every town i searched within a 100 mile driving distance from my home seems to have someone working it. many of the tellers would tell me of "the little ol man" who comes by twice a week and cleans them out, etc, etc. it also seems that every week that i pick up or dump i see someone new asking for halves or doing the same thing i am doing. the banks here are onto the game now as well. i have had several tellers ask me how much silver i am finding, and where i get all the halves from etc, etc. as a rule i do not discuss silver or any of my finds with tellers. i don't educate tellers either. like i said most bank employees are onto the game now anyway, and from what i have seen in the last few months most banks just want us all to go away. in the past year i have found 6 boxes (3000.00 face) of 40% halves and just a little over 500.00 face of 1964 kennedy's. i have also found many bens and walkers. the barber half is what is hard here. the last year i only found 2. i have also found several silver commens and 20 plus clad commens along with 30plus impaired clad proofs. anything that i have found that is not silver was just by accident because due to the volume that i do i only edge search.
i am hoping that 2010 will be bigger than 2009 but so far i have only found half of what i found for the month of jan.this year as compaired to this time last year.

Nice write up. Yes, dumping is the hardest part of this hobby. You mentioned that you dumped at brinks, and bought from brinks. How has this effected the amount of silver you find from your brinks banks? The numbers that you posted are impressive. You would begin to think that sorting at that level would dry up the silver in your area.

Welcome, and we look forward to hearing the updates along the way.

most of my volume is from loomis (20boxes) then garda (4 boxes) then brinks (2 boxes). it is all just luck of the draw is what i have found out. the loomis boxes were the best when i started, and now it seems the garda boxes are best. brinks has always been dead last but i have found some silver in them. with brinks it seems like i will have 1 good month then 3 or 4 bad ones then i have a good one again. i have tried to figure it all out, but have concluded that there is no rhyme or reason and if i did not stop i would drive myself crazy. i just take what comes every week. i would like to do more garda boxes but the bank that supplies me is the only one in town and they won't order anymore than 4 boxes for me a week. i have already asked and did not want to push it. i tried to get my dad to get some boxes for me but he is elderly and it was just too much for him to lift. my son is 20 but so far he has not shown any interest in this hobby but i am still trying with him. i have been coin collecting since i was 5 years old. my dad got me into it. i started coinroll hunting because i still wanted to collect coins and i did not have the means to buy coins for the last few years other than proof and mint sets due to short time and furloughs at work. so on my off days from work i would go road tripping with my dad (he is retired) and i would search boxes. my dad helps me search sometimes (the boxes) when he feels up to it. my wife also helps me every week with the 20 boxes.
i honestly don't know how much longer i will be able to search though. it seems to be getting harder and harder for me to dump.

I know. Dumping is a terrible burden. It seems to me that I can only dump about 3 or 4 times at one bank before they start getting impatient and suspicious about my large quantities of pennies and halves. I wish they would back off and take the pennies and halves because there is nothing illegal going on. Eventually, I am going to run out of banks completely and have to give up this great hobby.

i wish i could find a dump bank that would let me dump as much as i wanted without any problems. i just dont think they exist. i have been inside every bank within 100 miles of my home at some time or the other over the past year. many of them would not even sell me any halves if i did not have an account (which i think is the most stupid thing there is) and when you do have an account they don't want to deal with your dumps. the armored car services are beginning to be a problem in my area too. i am good frinds with the vault teller at one of my supply banks and she tells me every week that the delivery service employeee has many choice words about me every week when he delivers my order. it also never fails that between 3 supply banks one of my orders gets mucked up every week. one week garda said they ran out of halves and did not have anymore....???? what??? i am almost positive that i do get some of my dumps back. i don't mark coins but the odds are i do. i also have a theory about why silver gets into boxes. that has got to be happening through coinstar machines and the other coin counters. i say that because if silver passes through the hands of tellers they will pull it more than likely. if the silver goes through the coin counters the tellers are out of the picture, unless a teller opens a box and reseals it. i have had it happen at one of my supply banks and i know it is happening but i can't prove it. i get taped boxes from one of my supply banks on a regular basis. i have heard of it happening to others in the crh community as well. anyway, back to my theory, crooks can cash in silver coins at face at a coinstar machine and not draw attention to themselves, kids can too. and you also have people that got grandpa's collection and don't know what it is or just don't care and off to the coinstar they go. i talked to a coinstar employee when he was emptying the machine at a local grocery store here. i learned alot form him. he said that all the coins go into the same container that he takes to the office and is poured into another sorter, then bagged and sent to brinks, loomis or who ever they use. these services roll the coins and put them in boxes and send them out to the banks. i can't see it happening any other way, but i would be interested in hearing other theories.

I have one dump bank that doesn't give me any problems yet but now I got one more supply bank so I will have to wait and see. My problem is more of the supply end.

Supplying is not even close to being a problem for me. Buying pennies and halves is easy and without hassle. Dumping, on the other hand, is a tremendous burden that holds me back from being a massive copper penny hoarder.

I'm ramping up my dump banks to five and taking $100 in pennies every week to each one. I don't want to push it beyond that, and so far haven't had a problem. But I do see the handwriting on the wall. Either the dump banks will cut you off, or the supply banks will start charging, or copper will run out. All things considered, like Hoard advocates, sort as much as you can, while you still can.

Welcome newbie!

the reason i don't have a problem with my main supply bank is i took out a loan from them to coin roll hunt with. i took out a 10K loan for one year. i make a monthly payment of 40.00 which covers interest, insurance and fees for the loan and at the end of the year i take the 10K back to them. i am going to do the same deal for another year.
i was honest with the bank and told them what i wanted to do and made sure they could order 10K for me a week. they agreed so i have not had any problems with them. the other 2 supply banks have only agreed to order a few boxes for me. i think i may try to get a 5K loan with each of them to do the same and maybe i could up my volume a bit, as long as my dump situation holds out. another problem i have is only one bank has a coin counter in my area. this bank has several branches all with counters but the employees all float around so they all know me at all the branches and i am sure i have been the topic at the water cooler several times.

Thats right, I didnt connect the screen names right off. The only thing new here is I took a little trip to Sylacauga and Childersburg and rounded up all CWR's and got 76-40%, and 2-90%ers. Glad to see you joined us and best of luck in your searches.

Hi there-

Nice to hear from a pro!! I'm kinda close to your efforts; I sort about $3500 a week in halves. I also do pennies, however. I'm considering toning down my pennies and upping the halves to 4K.
I always told myself if I could FIND both a full $1000 face bag of 40% and a $1000 face bag of 90% from sorting I would stop. I've sold a couple good size accumulations; I've prolly sold about 500-600 40%'ers and about 200 90%'ers in all the time I've been doing this, but this 2010 year I made a vow not to sell any of my finds from now on. So far in 2010 found about 100 40's and 35 90's.
My source bank has always had a good 90% ratio. I read about other sorters who score 100+ 40%'s in one box, etc. etc. I've never had more than 50 40%'s in one box in the two years I've done this, but I've had SEVERAL boxes over the years with over 20 90% halves in them. Love those hot boxes.
I know what you mean about the dumping. I've got $3K in sorted halves I've got to dump by Saturday. It's starting to get like a second job, but as long as I'm finding silver and not getting hit with fees, I feel kind of obligated to do it. I'm physically addicted to opening the yellow roll and seeing the white stripe.
Anyway, good to read your story. Feels good to kinda "come clean" doesn't it????

wags

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

Loved reading your story. Very many similar aspects with my one year and three months of sorting. fb101 found me and brought me in.
One day at a small local branch I was dumping 3K in halves. I had a friend at the branch who made dumps easy at the time. fb101 was nearby and after watching he comes up and says, "there are others".

I was beside myself for a moment, stunned. I was busted, lol.
He asked a few questions which I was reluctant to answer.

Later, I found him here after following the link scribbled on a scrap of paper that day.

Since then, I have found those here to be a great and honest crowd who are fun to share with.

Thanks for the details.

I have found that the banks run hot and very, very cold here in Delaware. My landscape changes everyday and I am expecting changes this week.

I have searched about a half mil in halves in 15 months and my totals are not as high as yours. 50 rolls of 64's! 300 rolls of 40%!

We heard that things are good down your way and this reaffirms the reports.

We have pretty good dump banks with lots of TDBank counters locally.
I haven't been cut off yet but feel the pressure for sure. I just got a Ryedale too and also started adding nickels. I did about 30-35 boxes in the last week all totaled.

I should buy stock in 5 gallon buckets!

Love to hear how you manage hauling and storing.

I may run out of supply banks here soon. I have accounts at seven banks but they are all gravitating towards fees. Some ask for $5.00/box

I paid twenty bucks twice for eight boxes at my first supply bank after 6 months free@ 8 boxes a week.

Never again. 16 boxes yielded a few coins and I have not paid for coins since.

Some banks are demanding 5 cents a roll for pennies!

You know times are tough when banks charge for exchanging money.

Fees or no fees, that's their job. Like paying for air and water in a restaurant. The banks let themselves get in this jam. Made their own beds.

Still, it's tough going but I am addicted and will play it out until it's over. One of very many of my 0CDisms.

Keep writing!

I also note that my 1964 Kennedy finds are about equal (maybe 15% more lately, tops) with my totals of Ben Franklins or Walkers. How would you compare your finds?
