I stopped by a bank today that I hadn't been at since march when I dumped a box there.

I was looking for pennies, but thought I would ask for halves as wel. they said they had a lot so I only bought $50.

I opend them in the car and found that three of the rolls had silver including two franklins. I went back in, they said that they had $560 left. I said that i would take them. They $500 ended up being my dump. I took the othe 6 rolls. There were two full rolls of 40% In total I got 56-40% 2-1964 and 2-19532 franklins.

Score number two: I went to my source bank for boxes of halves (which have been horrible this month). I bought my halves and as I was leaving the head teller (who collects silver herself) said that two rolls came in yeaterday. They hadn't searched them and I could buy them if I wanted. Roll number 1 had 20-40% Roll number 2 only had 19 coins, but 7 were 40% and the rest were bicentennials.

I can't believe that people don't know that a Franklin Half dollar is silver and worth more than face! 40% Kennedy or 90% Kennedy I can see but Franklins? The bank tellers working in the city near me have no clue what a silver half is. Even the older women. How many rolls on average do you guys have to search to get a 40%? Or a 90%? Half dollars have to be the last source of silver coinage still in circualtion in any type of quantity. I'm blown away that I can get silver at the local bank just by asking for a roll of half dollars.

It seems like people really saved bicentenials back in the day as I'm getting lots of them.

Great score! Be sure to tell Country about it in the Half Dollars and Other Coins thread.
You should try this bank for other coins such as dimes and quarters as well. Who knows what you might find! Good luck!

I just hope the ignorance remains for a little while longer. I asked for halves today at 1 bank and the teller sais "We've had alot of people asking for halves lately, is there anything I need to know?" I simply said that they are not that rare but I like to save them. I couldn't bring myself to say anything else. I would be shooting my own foot.

It's been so many years since silver was minted people have no concept of silver coin. Probably also - the WWII generation is quickly dying off, so hoards are getting dumped at banks by unknowing kids and grandkids.

For fun, use halves at a coffee shop or for fast food. Some think it's a dollar, others think it's just cool, some don't know it is legal US coin.

Interesting enough, two years ago, I got a couple of hundred silvers from the bank next door to this one. You are right, I need to start buying other coins here and checking them out. I could go there a cuple times a month while working and it would be maybe 10 extra minutes on an hour drive.

Good idea. Make friends with the tellers and open an account there too, if you already haven't.

You guys are making me want to start checking rolls for silver. I figured that the odds of finding anything were so poor that I have just stuck to copper (the sure thing). Congratulations on that score!!

Hoard now and hold on!

Yeah, I've always wondered myself how someone can come accross a silver coin and just throw it away in their change. I remember my first encounter with a silver coin ... curiosity came over me, then I did the research and low & behold ... I had silver in my hands! Then from there, I saved my silver and sought for more.
I find it funny that people cry and complain about the CD rates and how they're so low, but instead of investing in CD's, buy some silver! Whenever I find a 90% half dollar, I figure that's a 1300% return!!! Where else can you find that!!

You'll probably see me on A&E's Hoarders for silver hoarding someday.
