when the quake in haiti happened people immediately started blogging and fb on social networks about it. i found myself participating in the topics. but FINALLY i got tired of the sheeple asleep at the wheel and stated on fb...IF THE QUAKE IN HAITI DOESN'T WAKE YOU UP TO BEING PREPARED NOTHING WILL. well, three days later my area was hit with a TORNADO!!! LOS ANGELES WITH A TORNADO!? an F zero, but who'd have thought it? we usually get water spouts that disappear as soon as they form. NOT THIS TIME!!! the tornado went from my hometown of san pedro to ornage county, los angeles county, ventura county, etc... now we are not tornado alley...and the damage was not the same severity as in tornado alley, but it got people's attention.
the day of the tornado i decided to keep my dd home because she woke up with a congested cough. good thing too. we had thunder and lighting. we unplugged unneccessary electronics leaving on only one tv and of course the fridge.
after the fact, i find a fb friend i had gone to school with clamoring for my help and advice on fb.---remind you of any p.a.w. storyline? however, she was definitely awakened!!! she vowed to get GO BAGS for every member of her family. AND SHE DID!!! WITHIN 24 HOURS!!! she planned to talk to her school about being emergency prepared and allowing her two boys to keep their GO BAGS in the classroom. BTW, her two boys had to spend 30 minutes on lock down under their desks because of the tornado!
HOW'S THAT FOR A WAKE UP CALL?!!!

I remember growing up in a small Idaho farm town when the newly constructed Teton dam broke. We lived on a hill and the water level came nowhere close to our house but the downtown and surrounding areas were wiped out. My family as well as several unfortunate folks whose homes were destroyed, lived from our food storage for a few weeks. That experience always stuck in my mind remembering how desperate the flood victims were as well as being an Eagle Scout constantly thinking "Be prepared".

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities. |

The Boy Scout angle is the one I'm using to try to convince my mom to prep. My middle brother was very active in Boy Scouts, and really both of my brothers have the same preparedness attitude I have, we're just spread out across the country and I live just a few miles from my mom, so I'm on the front lines of persuasion, so to speak. My mom doesn't see a need to prep as long as she can still work and still get her $800 a month in Social Security. |

I'm not saying this as my own story. Though you're talking about calamities, I would like to share this thought. As death, poverty, disasters, and natural calamities continue to harm and make the lives of millions of people difficult, the children who experience these tragedies are the ones who suffer the most. It is because they have lesser experience on life survival. |

And unfortunately too many of those kids have parents who aren't inclined toward being prepared. My middle brother and I were both Boy Scouts (I'm the oldest of three boys) and my youngest brother also goes camping a lot (plus, he lives in Colorado).
But for some reason our mother is about as far away from the "Be Prepared" mindset as you can get. A couple weeks ago I took over to her place a couple mason jars of dehydrated mackerel and veggies and encouraged her to incorporate them into her cooking to see how good they are, but she has yet to open either jar. She told me she's worried about botulism since there wasn't a vacuum seal on this particular jar--never mind that botulism can only grow in the presence of water, and there's no water in dehydrated food, plus the jar is tightly sealed. Beyond that, though, she isn't doing anything at all that I can see in terms of stocking up on food or anything else, so I'm making sure I'll have plenty of food to help her if the occasion warrants it at some point...but it's frustrating the heck out of me that she doesn't see a need at all to live below (or even within) her means and doesn't understand that she might not be able to find food at the grocery store if a major catastrophe occurs. She's 67 and I'm not expecting major life changes at her age, but I'm sure hoping that a wakeup call comes soon for her. |

One weekend my dd's great grandma came down to visit after her Sunday social. Well we three generations of women went to the $.99 store and got her pantry stocked up for natural disasters. We chose foods that were easy to cook or eat. Also they had to double up on feeding many at any one time. She is set for one week for herself and 1-3 friends.
The food was placed in her rv with no fear of spoilage. |
