It seems way to high to me. I've never purchased wheat cents outside of sorting, but I believe that most people here only pay .03 or .04 cents a coin.

i would track a few more similar auctions before i made a conclusion, aloneibreak. i hope it IS a trend, though, because i am sitting on quite a few myself. my ebay experience is that anything can happen in one auction.

thats just it. most similar auctions go from 200 - 250 or so. what was it about this auction that caused the bid to go so high? the description? the sellers feedback? doesnt the buyer realize he WAY overpaid? maybe someone got tied up in a bidding war, i dunno. just interesting.

"doesnt the buyer realize he WAY overpaid?"

Those who bought into the housing bubble didn't think they overpaid, or way overpaid (or maybe just didn't think, much like bidiots behavior on ebay.)

I sometimes see ads for wheat cents for Way over their common value (3¢ or 4¢ each) from Johson Smith catalogs, mail order coin companies, free daily papers, etc, so the market to shear the sheeple is still out there.

Why not? If you had a car taht you wanted to sell and it was worth $1,000. Wouldn't you at least try for $2,000? Nothing to loose and who knows what idiots are out there. I recently sold a car that myself and several others thought was worth $500 and yet it sold for $900. Same principle. If someone will pay for it, take the money and don't complain. True, many are selling for less, but this seller wants to make more, that's all.

I sell wheats cents at the flea market. I get $0.06 each all day long and usually sell about 3000. If somebody wants alot at once, I will go as low as $0.04, I get them for $0.03. I charge $0.06 because the market is 65 miles from anywhere and I am the only coin dealer at the market. I also right now am getting 12x face on US silver.

sounds like you got a good thing going there frugi. like PT Barnum said, there is a sucker born every minute. these places like shop at home network and cable shopping network have made a ton of money convincing a very gullible public to buy coins and paper money, sometimes for double what they can ever hope to resell them for. those guys really make me chuckle. the network will show a disclaimer stating that you may not be able to resell any item you buy from them at the same or greater value, but then the sales guys will basically tell you that you can.

Nice going there Frugi. And why not. If no one wanted them, they just wouldn't buy them. If I were you and they sold for that amount, I'd raise the prices even more. At a flea market they can always try chewing you down since that is flea market proceduresss. At a flea market I go to there is a dealer that sells almost any cent coin for $0.50 each. Of course many people try chewing him down and walk away feeling great that they got him down to $0.25 each.
And as to any TV adds, if you listen carefully they usually say things like "You may..." or "You might...." or "Possibly you could...". See there is a legal thing with those adds that they have to be carefull not to use words like SHALL, MUST, CAN, WILL, ETC. Listen and you'll always hear MAY, COULD, POSSIBLY, MIGHT, ETC.
