I have an 1883 Liberty Nickel that would normally grade in VF-XF condition but unfortunately has a few dings on the rim. What condition would you grade this coin with the dings? Thanks in advance...
I would have to agree with copperhead57. They are not bad dings at all. VF should be about right, but a grading service might call that a Fine. Did you get that in a roll of nickels, or did you purchase it?
Thanks for the replies. I purchased it in part of a larger collection of US and World coins. What I am trying to do is get an inventory list together with grades and values. I have a grading guide book which helps me out a lot but it doesn't really say how to grade if its dinged. I have some other coins that have scratch marks which I guess I would knock down a grade or two depending on severity as well.
I would say that the coin would still have to be around VF, if I read correctly on ding or scratches that take away from eye appeal are the ones that will really knock it down a grade. I would think the average and above average collector would not let those dings take away from the collection value, however your high end collector may turn there nose up at it. Just my thoughts.
