I was down at the Flea Market today to pick up my buy of Canadian's. Looking around another man had a bunch of wheat's so naturally I couldn't pass them up. He wanted .50 per wheat. So I picked up 10 for 5.00 since that was all I had after my other purchase. These were mostly teens and a few S mints in the 20's, that I needed for my book's. I knew I was over paying a little but I needed a shoe in. So talking with the guy I asked him if he ever wanted to sell what he has for bulk. He said sure what do you pay. I told him I would give him .40 for all pre-40 he had. So my question would this be a good buy or not, I am suppose to meet him next Saturday to hash out the details. I was also wondering if later I opened a WTB post for wheat's, mainly looking for pre-40's, what would be a fair price that you would be looking for.

| You wanted to give him 0.04 cents a piece or 0.40 cents a piece for pre-40? |

| Seems a little high to me. Course I haven't bought pre-40s lately. I would suggest you cut it off at pre-34. |

I think that is significantly above what you could buy them for here.. including shipping. That is $20 a roll. I can get 200 rolls in a flat rate box. That would work out to $2000 a bag.. way too high. |

I think in bulk.. wholesale runs something like 6-8 cents for 30's, 8-10 cents for 20's and 10-12 cents for teens. Of course it is always a challenge to buy all you want at wholesale prices. |

| For .40 per wheat, I would sell you all that I have. Don't buy his for .40. That is way too high. |

That is what I was thinking guys. I think I will offer him the .40 on teens and twenty's. The 30's and 40's I kind of had another idea for. I have rounded enough coinage over the years of collecting that I think I might start trying to establish myself as a seller at the market here and some show's. The reason for the premium was because down here in Florida they are not as abundant as back home in Texas, usually average 10 per box and usually only 1 pre-40. I have tried to pick some up on feeBay but all the wheat roll's they put an IH on the end and call it unsorted and the price goes a little high for me. Thanks for the input guys, I am going to put some math to it and see what happens. If not the WTB board may get a post.
Hoard I haven't forgot our deal, let me check my stats this week the Canadian's weren't exactly what I had in mind so the purchase was a little lighter than expected. |

Last year I bought a 30 lb bag of Wheats. They are as of yet "unsearched" buy me but the few handfuls I did look at were all 1935-1947. No steel, very few mint marks. The bag cost me $64.00 and was sold as copper bulllion.
That was a good deal |

I still think you are way high at 40 cents each. You can sometimes get Indians for that much. If you are going to become a seller, you have to buy right. Don't bury yourself in the early wheats at that price.. you can buy them much cheaper from fellow members. The USPS loves delivering those 70 pound boxes to Florida. |

| Ouch! 50 cents a wheat penny? That's too high. I would say 20 to 30 cents per wheat penny. However, I choose to get them in bank rolls for one cent! :-) |

You can get via the mail an infinite number of wheats if you pay a decent amount.
For teens and 20's I'm assuming AG/G condition and you can get them for 10 cents each all day of the week in as much bulk as you want. At 20 cents each you are literally at INFINITE
For 30's up you can easily pay 4 cents maybe a tad extra. At 5 cents each you are literally at INFINITE.
Both those prices would INCLUDE shipping
Trust me, I've bought a million (literally) wheats so I know the market fairly well :) |

On the 30's I am an INFINITE buyer at 4 cents and would take quite a bit of action at 5 cents. |

I just sold a roll set for $299.00 with free shipping. It had 24 rolls before 1940 and all three rolls of the steel 43'S P,D, and S and a roll of 55S. Are the coins you are looking at in BU condition or are they G-4? I have a bag of teens I will sell you for a lot less than .40 cents a piece.

George454, There's nothing wrong with the flea market guy selling a few specimens for 30-40-50 cents.
There's nothing wrong with you buying a few specimens for 30-40-50 cents.
That's how economies of scale work. If you going to buy bulk for resale, to sell a few at a time you have to charge 50 cents per item.
But heed the advice of everyone here. Buy them by the thousands at 3 cents, sell them at .30-1.00ea. There's nothing wrong with that.
Is there? |

IMHO you are paying way to much for those wheats .... even the 'teens'.
Why don't you consider waiting on that deal and check to see what you can get in equal numbers of wheats and dates from those who sell here. I really believe you would be much happier and it would be 'safer' to buy from the guys who sell on this forum.
Best wishes whatever you decide
sheba
P.S. .... though it is 'slow going' and 'slow accumulation, being that I am a 'hand sorter', I too pefer to get my 'wheats' for face value - .50 cents for each .50 cent roll I pick up and hope to find a wheat once in a while |

The coins I purchased are some of the better quality wheat's I have seen, however I did cherry pick them. I will reconsider the buy but it will depend a lot on quality. Most of the coins he has are AU teens and twenty's. I know I can buy the 40 and 50's dirt cheep but I have little interest in these in the buy. The ones I am after are the 1910's through 1916 that are in great shape, and who knows what else he has. He told me he has a whole lot of them but only breaks open a roll or two every month or so to refill the supply. I know that the .40 sounds pretty high and I know I can do better but for a chance at truly un-searched is a rare deal. I meet with the dealer next Saturday, I will keep yall up to date.
Thank you for the input. |
