Ah.. that is a penny of a different color. If you get AU's for .40 I'm sure there are plenty of us here that will be glad to buy some of them off you for a profit. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

| The Red Book says values of AU wheats in the teens range from $10.00 to $175.00 depending on the year and mint, not counting the 09S VDB or the 14D. If you can buy AU wheats from the teens for .40 cent apiece that is a STEAL. Buy all you can get. I thought you were talking about G-4 to VF-20's which most of them are. |
COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

| I am sure there are going to be some G-4 if the guy decides to sell but like I said most of the ones he has on display average about VF and a few EF's. The EF's are the ones I cherry picked out of what he had displayed for .50 cents. There were also some that would grade AU maybe not 50 but close. These he had separate and was selling them for a little more, however when I asked him he said they all came from the same roll. I am hoping the rolls he has at home consist of the same. I will probably take a few samples to ensure they are worth the investment first. I finally went back and read my first post and realize I forgot to mention this. Sorry for the confusion. I would also like to pick up many of the wheat's from people on this board in the future and thank you for the offers. |

| You brought up some really interesting conversation... some stuff I was wondering about. Of course I know this forum is primarily about bullion and I totally get that. But I've said before I'm basically 90% numismatist and 10% hoarder. Maybe now it's more like 80-20. So anyway I was kind of wondering whether very many people here were collectors, and what their perspective is on some of the "better date" wheats. It just makes sense to me that most people who hoard copper would have at least some interest in the hobby/numismatic side of it. |

You're exactly right.
The penny merchant must discriminate between the horder and the collecter who wants to fill his whitmanbook with the best possible quality coins.
That's what happened to me.
I started as a horder (silver, copper) and became a, sick in the head, coin collecter.

Hard to say what my percentage is right now. I started as a collector.. then became a hoarder.. but I am still a collector. I suppose I am a real collector.. since I even have collections you can't play whitman bingo with. We can enjoy the best of both worlds. |

I started as a hoarder and am becoming a collector. The coppers are just a bonus. The most fun for me now is searching the zinc pile for the pre-1940's. The coppers stack up, I don't even keep track of them. When they get to five times face, I'll inventory what I've got. For now, gotta find those scarce date Lincoln's while they're still out there |
Hoard now and hold on!

| That's about what I thought I would get for them. They usually go around 50 cents each. I might try a bunch here and see if realcent does any better than feebay. |

Well, as the old saying goes "that is a horse of a different color!"
If you can pick up true XF - AU, problem free cents from 1909 -1920 at .40 each, go for it ... that is a tremendously great deal!!
The 'collecter' side of me would just love to have an opportunity to get truly unsearched wheats of those dates in XT - AU condition ... I might even pay more that .40 a piece
Hope all goes well for you in this purchase. Maybe you can let the forum know how it all works out ... so at least we can be 'jealous' over your great find

Whoever won, if it's someone in this forum, perhaps you could share a few? I have been building a collection, and I don't really like to pay for nice stuff, I just want to have one of each date! |

| To respond to the collector question I would say I probably 60-40 on the collector side. I love sorting coppers but nothing gets the heart going like picking up some AU Indian penny or a three cent piece. However here lately I have gotten into trying to put together all S mint Kennedy proofs and S mint pennies. But while the wife is still looking for a job I have had to slow down. Oh well, good luck to everyone In the hunt if you are a hoarder or a collector. I will also keep you up to date on the buy. |
