I had an hour drive home from work today. I turned it into 2 hours by stopping at 17 banks. See the Ag recap thread for the final score.
At one bank the head teller says, "They are kind of ugly, are you sure you want them?" I had already heard the sound of Ag and knew I wanted them. Pretty hard to play it cool. "Sure I will get them out of here for you."
Out of 12 coins, 9 of them are heavily toned 40% Ag.

They sure look pretty to me!

Far from ugly. That 68 is a good deep strike. I notice a little toning!

Beauty is in the eye of the ... Whatever.

Congratulations.

40% silver is 40% silver ugly or not they all bring about the same retail. For face value you can't complain.

This really makes me wish I had the funds and resources to sort halves.

Shattered –
Make friends with one of the tellers or account managers. See if they will order a box of halves. Explain that you don't have $500 but you do have $10. Tell them exactly what you are doing. Drop by every day, on your way to and from work/school, and buy a roll. Find somewhere else friendly enough to give you $10 for the skunks so that you have $10 for the next roll. Eventually you will find Ag. You will be able to turn a 90% coin into $6 and/or a 40% coin into $2.5. Eventually you will have $20 in hand and can buy 2 rolls at a time. Repeat, repeat, repeat – tenacity pays, literally. All of us old farts wish we would have stuck with it when we were young.
Don't resent the journey. I went to 17 banks that day. One locked the door in my face as I was trying to enter (closing time) - the bank worker didn't even acknowledge my existence. At another bank the main teller gave me a nice zipper cash bag and told me to come back often (I might make a friend and open an account there).

Thanks AmalekiDad. It's you "old farts" who give us young guys the inspiration and advice to get interested in something like this and make it happen. I never would have thought to do something like this. I have two banks within reasonable walking distance that I have bought pennies from in the past and I don't see why I can't make this work. Thanks for the great advice I will try to put it to good use.

I have some truely ugly siver. It is a whole roll of 40%. It appears that the sides had been fused together in a fire and then someone chiseled them apart with a skrewdriver.

I started out doing the partial boxes. And probably would order well outside what my wallet could cover, if the tellers would put up with that.

1 box of halves isn't too much trouble for the typical bank. IF it's a smaller branch you may want to hit up a larger one that can store it while you make the rounds to and from.

I would be happy to get any of these for 1.75 shipped. I'm VERY happy that I got them at face. Don't be sad when you can get a 40% delivered to you for under $2.50 - I try for lower but I lose alot of bids.
