I thought maybe we can get a sticky hand sorting board going for us that still use the good ol' skwint and sort method for getting our copper. I know all of us have our tricks and methods for sorting and I figured here we can exchange ticks, methods, thing we look for, things we found, and anything else pretaining to the copper minning.

So I dont know what it takes to get this to be a sticky or if some one would like to make a sticky for us but thought it would be a good idea.

I will start with my year to date finds:

Copper- 22 dollars
1982's- 115 Lg date
-12 Sm date
Wheats- 18 Best 1919 S
Canadians- 14 Mostly 1970's and one 1944
Bahamian- 5
Random- 1978 1 centesmo from god only know's
Error's- 0 Really havent been looking

Just posting to brag that I actually cleared off my workbench in the garage last night! I then set up my penny mining operation on it, turns out I have a lot of mining equipment, but still can only go through a low volume.

I have, for instance, a scale accurate to 0.01 grams. I found I was going quicker than my Penny Miser just by hand-feeding them onto the scale and sliding them off by weight to the North or the South.

The Penny Miser was running the pre-sort, and then I was weighing the keepers. The miser increased the Cu ratio to about 60-70%, and the Zincolns were getting a quick check on a wide flat cardboard tray (like to hold six-packs of soda-cans) before being dumped into a canvas bag for counting and return.

Last night I found a Swedish 50 Ore, a Euro 2-cent, 3-4 wheats, and eight dimes mixed into the rolls. Bonus! Mining copper out of circulation is pretty fun, I must say. My most interesting find this year is a Bermuda cent with a pig on the back.

I've found some interesting things, including a 1920 Wheatie earlier this morning.
Wheaties are aplenty right now for me.

My best wheat penny that I found was in a $50 bag of pennies of the bank's coin counter. It was a 1909 VDB. To bad there was no s on the front :)

My method is pretty simple. I sit on a couch and set up a wooden TV tray. I put coins on that, and move them to either the top left, top right, or bottom right. Top left is 1982, top right is zinc, and bottom right is copper. After that, I pick up the '82s and drop them in a jar for further analysis. I count the coppers by threes to see how many I had, and I dump them into a shoe box to be rolled later. Then, I push the zincs off the table into a large crayon-shaped coin bank. I never knew how useful that thing would be.

I guess my best find would be a 1913-S. I haven't found too many wonderful Wheats, but I've had my fair share of Indians. They're out there.

Next to the computer I can sort, listen to music, and post on here all at the same time. The red bag is for the paper rolls.

Oh the memories of hand sorting. I'd recommend working on a table that has no edge so you can slide the coins off. You get used to being hunched over a bit and almost bowing your arms. After a while they seem to be the only thing moving on your body.

have the chair to table ratio set so the table is high or the chair is low to reduce straining your back. This will catch up with even the youngest hand sorter given enough time.

Shattered i don't know if you like watching tv. But with the PC I usually would spend a day breaking apart some 25-50 boxes of pennies while watching my favorite tv shows online. Just a thought, but it seems to be quicker if you break them down first then go on to sorting.

i use quarter tubes, in a cottage cheese container. top two are , 1968-74 and 75-81d
middle tier is 60-67, 82 , and 1980
closest to me , 68-72 ie ,the ones i save out for agcollector, 75-81d and third, 75-81 P.

this makes it so that i can sort $10 without changing things. oh, and the 59s, canadians, wheats and oddities go onto a contain lid.

i then break down the pulled coins further.

removing ones for ag collector. any 'culls',

Hi there shattered-

This is almost identical to my setup, and I assume it's similar to most hand-sorters' setups.
I can sort all day long in front of the computer; though after 4 non-stop boxes of pennies, I get a little batty. Been racking up the wheats, though.
I try to sort $500-$600 a month in cents.

wags

Only when they CAN'T have it, ......THEN they'll want it.

I love Cents. If you get an UNC box, you win. If you get a regular circ. box, you win. If you get a zinc box, you don't lose....so you still win.

I use a method similar to Corsair's. I have not found any IH's yet but quite a few wheats. I did find something interesting the other day - an off center cu probably between 2-3%, probably VF to EF condition. If I could figure how to copy and paste it here - I would. I've already got the image saved on my HDD. I have seen off centers in this range before in circulation but they are not that common - probably less than the numbers of wheats you find.

Hey guys I am jealous of the set ups. I usually do it on the floor in front of the TV so that I can spend quality time with the wife, sort and watch our shows all at the same time. Here are my stats on last nights box.

190- Coppers
36- BU Coppers
9- Wheat's (best date 37 & 38)
8- Canadians
1- Bahamian
5- S mints (70's)
62- 1982 Lg Date
10- 1982 Sm Date

Wow, your set-ups are wonderful, you guys! :-) I just do it on the floor, being crouched over and uncomfortable. I think I might consider devoting me entire desk to penny sorting.

My mom is getting on to me so I have to move my operation upstairs into my room. I don't have a computer up there though. I guess I'll better bust out the old CDs and CD player.

Tell your Mom that Kirkland insists you stay at your wonderful little spot there. It couldn't be more perfect for you, and I'm jealous. :-)

Since I starting college in the fall I think a computer of my own will be in my future.

You bet it will. Since you don't have much time left before you go off to college, I think you should stay in your wonderful place.

When I hand sorted I also used the floor but I ran into a problem. I was getting the carpet dirty from the copper. I started to lay a towel down to keep the wife happy.
