should I turn in scrap now and buy some silver or just wait to cash in scrap at the top?

It is hard to figure out where the tops or bottoms are in the world of stocks, bonds or scrap metal.
My suggestion, figure out the different kinds of scarp you have, write down on paper the different kinds you have & roughly how much, look online to see which scrap metals have had the highest run ups since last year, sell those which have had the biggest runups, leave the rest to sell another day. Take some money off the table, keyword here is some. If prices go up, you won't feel mad at yourself (or me) for selling now. If prices go down, you made some money, and that takes some of the sting out of the loss.

If we continue down the inflation road, all commodities will continue to do well.
If we get into a recession, depression, deflation mode, commodities could be crushed. (Think no more copper needed for building houses and running wires to subdivisions.) In this environment gold and silver will likely take in the chin too, but will recover before the base metals. In any case it won't be fun waiting for the recovery.
It is also possible that we get into a stagflation situation where commodities will continue to OK despite a crappy US economy. It could happen if the rest of worlds economy keeps chugging along while our dollar and economy goes in the toilet.
Things seem to be pointing to inflation or stagflation at the moment, but there are no guarentees only guesses. If I were you I, would try and rotate into whatever commodity is looking cheap at the moment. Silver seems to be lagging the other metals a bit at the moment. So it would not be a bad choice. Nickel would have been a great choice after it crashed recently....if you could figure out how to buy it.
Unfortunately, gold and silver can't protect us through all the SHTF scenarios.

I think this is what's probably going to happen.
