Short story for you silver hunters and gatherers.
Today I went to get my hair cut.
After I was done and I was standing at the register I saw a Burt's Bees box, and thought,
"hmm maybe I should pick one up for my girlfriend, she is out and loves this stuff."
I end up getting it, hand the teller a $5 she hands me back my change.
When she puts it into my hand it makes weird noise. We both look at my hand as I sift through knowing exactly what had happened. One of the quarters was silver.
She asks "why did it make that noise." I tell her "because this quarter is silver" I show it to her, she looks at it and goes to put it in the drawer thinking I did not want a silver quarter.
I say "NO, I want that one."
I feeling giddy now, smiling ear to ear, practically run out of the store. For getting to get my jacket. (I got the jacket before I drove off)
As it turns out I made 33c buying that lip wax.

ha, sorry sir for giving you a silver coin I'll get you a different one. She either had no idea or a very good idea of it's value. |

Nice find. I pull silver out of circulation quite often. Keep looking!

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

Another good deed repaid. Now you can smack your girl friend and think of more than soft lips. LOL |

My find the other was not quite as good, but still good nonetheless. Ran into the local grocery store to pick up some dishwasher detergent and sifting thru my change was a '59 Roosevelt. Another one for the pile :) |

This dates to late fall 2007...
Was playing in a dart tournament on a Saturday night. The bar has a quarter machine where you can stick in $1, $5, etc. and get quarters for the electronic dart boards.
I fed in $1.00 and got (4) quarters...to my great surprise one of them was a 1942-S Washington. I fed in numerous more $$$ but did not turn up any more silvers.
Dating to January 2008...
My dad received a 1941 Mercury dime in change from a Taco John's restaurant.
True circulation finds (not searching boxes) are awesome, but they certainly are few and far between.

This find was from a few years ago. While getting my change at a McDonalds drive thru I got a silver war nickel. I always take a quick look at my change when I get it, but this time I just sat there for a moment to admire my find--#%$@*^ off the guy behind me for taking too long! |

Ha ha! That's how I ended up with a couple $10 rolls of silver quarters for face value. I worked at this restaurant about 20 years ago, and went to the bartender to get change for a monopoly money dollar/FRN to use the pay-phone, and the bartender dropped the quarters into my hand and I heard the dull clink-clink-clink... Being a coin collector since I was a kid, I knew what was up, I looked into my hand and saw 4 silver quarters. I immediately asked the bartender for more change, same thing. So I went to ask the manager if I could buy any rolls of quarters they might have in the safe, and found out he was keen to what was going on too. So, he saved 4 rolls for himself and let me buy 2, which I thought was pretty cool of him. Man I love that dull metallic sound! |

I have a theory that the clad process ruins the natural resonant properties of a coin. If a coin is one metal composition through and through it will resonate. The ring of a gold, silver, or bronze coin always stands out to my ear among the dry thunks of clad coins. Nickel and Zinc just don't seem to resonate as well. The most horrible coins to listen to? Chinese Fen clacking together (the 1,2, & 5 Fen denominations are made of aluminum). I have played some bells that were made from cast aluminum, which is really odd to think about...bronze bells are far superior. |

Lately, I have been thinking about the christmas song "silver bells" Since I began collecting silver, that phrase has new meaning. I bet silver bells sound beautiful. |
