When was the first time the US cent reached or surpassed parity? When was the first time it doubled?
Thanks

I went to Coinflation and all I could find archived was some original articles written for their pages.

I think the person that is involved with Coinflation is a member on here so perhaps they would know how to retrieve the archived pages that show the value of the coins each day. I thought being able to research these would be the easiest way but someone else may know of another way to find this information.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone.

Here's a little history on the intrinsic value of the penny, nickel, and quarter.

154 new pennies make up a pound of copper. When did copper exceed $1.54 is the answer. May 16, 2005

Nope...Never got above $1.50 until 2004.

The high for '80s was $1.44 on February 12, 1980.

More to the cost of making a penny then just the price of copper. It takes design, labor, equipment, distribution costs etc.

I'm confused by that graph. It shows all years divisible by 5 twice. For example, it says 1987 1988 1989 1990 1990 1991 etc. What's that about? And it looks like it DID go a ways over $1.50 in 1988/89. It has stayed over parity since 2005, and it seems that 2005 or 2006 it reached 2x face, and has GENERALLY stayed close to or over that for most of the time since. I think that's the info I needed.
That seems like a pretty important question to me. I'm surprised more people didn't know the answer!

you may be right. it certainly did get substantially above the metal value back then. it was more of a shortage of pennies, banks asking you to deposit them, etc. and then the price went down, and they took the copper out anyway, so sorting never got going until recently

Hey, I remember that! I was a wee lad, but I remember my parents' bank giving 10% over face value for all the pennies you brought in! I had totally forgotten that until I read what you said. Whoa.
