I work the night shift at a grocery store, where it is always convenient to grab 40-50c soda cans and 50c mini water bottles from soda machines.
I always carry 8 quarters around, due to the convenience (as anyone who's ever tried to shove a dollar bill into a soda machine knows :)) I always bug the cashiers for a roll of quarters when I run out, and everyone thinks I'm weird.
I don't care, though. You never know when you'll need quarters for a soda machine, pay phone (yes, a dying breed, but still around), or even a normal purchase. Saves you trips to the ATM. Plus, there's the cool-retro-1913 feel to it.
Whenever I get the quarters, I always sort through them, hoping to eventually strike silver. It's never happened to me, though everyone here seems to have successfully struck silver with the Brinks boxes. (I would be too embarrassed to request a Brinks box, as if the quarter rolls aren't bad enough :))
Recently, though, something strange happened. I got a roll from the cashiers, and came across 3 or 4 bicentennials in the roll! Hopefully, if I get enough of them, I'll be able to sell rolls of "circulated bicentennials" on eBay, which seem to go for just above the cost of a normal roll of quarters.
And hopefully I will get lucky someday (haha, get your mind out of the gutter, Old Nickel) and strike silver. Who knows.

i thought i was the only one who still used coins in vending machines?!?! its a great way to get rid of the coins you get throughout the week. ive been saving the bicentennials for years but only have a half dozen rolls or so. hard to believe theyre selling on ebay for those prices.
i have never searched rolls of quarters but i would say i average 2 silver quarters a year. i have never received a silver dime in circulation though. |

I've only recieved one silver coin in my pocket change and it was a quarter. When i get the urge to find some silver i look for halves. Last time i bought some (i think it was 30 dollars worth or so) I found one 90% and two 40%.

I actually get an occasional silver dime or quarter at work. I have gone through several rolls from the bank, but only found a few silvers. The yields are too low to justify the time and capital investment. I have better luck with half dollars when looking for silver.
I like that idea of using your spare coins in the soda machines.. but try as I might, both the Pepsi machine and the Coke machine at work keep rejecting my zinc pennies!
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

Don't be embarrassed to ask for a box of quarters. Don't be embarrassed to ask for anything from a bank. Worst they can do is say no and look at you funny. Maybe I'm just used to the looks by now. Most of the bankers are starting to remember me, and I'm in no way big time.
I, like most of us here I'm sure, look through my pocket change daily. I find a few 90% dimes and a few 90% quarters every year around here. Maybe they are stolen and pawned in the ghetto, (15 miles or so to the west), and make it into circulation. I work all over town though and have good coverage of ghetto stores. I never pay with change. Only dollars. If I pay exact amount, how would I find any silver in my pocket.
I too keep bicentennials. Why not. Design used for only two years. 1976 and 77 if some of you didn't know. Most of you probably know that. Worst case scenario they are still quarters. The important thing is that you are having a great time collecting them.

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks. |

The mintage figures for Bicentennial Quarters were huge. I've been an off-agin on-again collector since about 1976, and I have to say I've never had the urge to collect them because they're so common. I think they were made 1975-1976, not 1977.
Never had much luck finding silver in change (and I do check pretty much everything that passes through my hands). Have found 3 silver dimes over the past 10 years.

I keep bicentenial quarters only because i've been doing it since i was a kid. The bicentenial halves i get when i sort halves get spent on cigarettes and lunch and other small purchases along with all of my other reject halves.

The only vending machine I know of that takes pennies is the stamp machine at the post office. Oh, yeah, there are still a few Lions Club gum machines that take pennies.

The only machine I know that takes pennies is the self-checkout at Krogers grocery stores. People behind me in line are really annoyed when I whip out my little bag of zincolns and start feeding them in one-by-one!

My boss (and soon-to-be partner, I hope) has several apartment buildings, about 100 doors, and his buildings have community laundry facilities. Every month one of our secretaries empties the quarters out of those machines, which she dutifully rolls up and deposits in the bank.
I asked her to (1) look for any quarters that don't have red sides, and (2) look for any 1976 quarters. She replied to me that she doesn't have time to do that!
Oh, the insolence! Oh, the shame of it! The very idea of not having time to make money!
Fortunately for me/us most people don't have the time or the drive to make money!
I've been collecting 1976 quarters since I was born in 1976. I get very few in change these days.
Moreover, I can ascertain that something is composed of silver just by feeling it in my hand. I don't remember ever having received anything silver in change.
I don't use vending machines because I'm a cheapskate.

EAD, So did you get access to them yourself? You should just have her count them, and you could buy them, and save her wrapping them. Get an old counter, and have her count into a bag, and you could go through them later. May not be worth it, but you never know till you try.

I stand corrected. Thank you for that. I don't want to propagate false information.
