Hey everyone,
I am a newbie at all of this and have spent the better part of the day reading through the posts.
First, I am curious if anyone on the boards is in LA. I wouldn't want to be frequenting someone's "dump" bank by mistake :)
Also, does anyone know of any free coin counters at banks in LA? We don't have Commerce or Chase here. My credit union has a machine for 5% (which isn't terrible) but if there is a free one I would love to know.
Looking forward to many more posts and a ton of copper :)

Welcome to the forum penny4mythoughts. I think Slimhoard is from LA, but don't worry, LA is big so there will probably be enough pennies to go around. When you get your first box that is 100% zinc and not 2007 you will know you found someone's dump bank. I think there was a post about free or cheap coin counting banks on another thread. 5% can certainly eat into the profits. Hope you can find a place to turn them in for free.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I'm in Los Angeles and I dump at every bank on Ventura Blvd between Laurel Canyon and Van Nuys Blvd
I just dumped thousands of dollars worth of zinc this past week so beware of Studio City pennies! |

Thousands of dollars worth? Either you got behind on your dumping or you are real big time. I might have to start worshiping you like i do HCBTT, lol. PS. Please don't take all of the good pennies. Leave a few for the small time folks like me:)

CommandD, did you have any trouble dumping that much zinc? How did you end up with so much to dump if none of your banks will order boxes of coin for you?

Hey command, Thanks for the info. That isn't too far from my neighbourhood so good to know where to avoid for pickups. Also, any of the banks you use do free coin counting? Or do you roll to return?
Thanks so much!

Yeah, I'm behind on my dumping. I used to keep every penny, but now I'm making room for more coppers by dumping all of the zincs I've collected over the years. Until recently I never gave up a single penny!
I can not get boxes, but manage to pick up rolled pennies nearly every day if I want. I live within walking distance of 6 banks so I just stop in as I go for my walk.
I get rid of rolled coins to banks at no more than ten at a time. I use coinstar at the drug store because you don't have to pay a fee if you get it put on a CVS gift card (I shop there anyway) or Amazon (ditto.) Other Coinstars give gift cards for places like Starbucks, Borders, etc. If you shop at these places it all works out in the end.
Here is the coinstar link showing available gift cards:

My wife's credit union (at least one branch) has a free coin counter as do many Downey Savings. |

CommandD, have you tried asking at your wife's credit union to see if they will sell you the bags of coin that they take in? That way you don't even have to break them out of the rolls.
I have used Coinstar with the free gift certificate option before, but for more than a bag or 2 of zinc it takes too long for me to feed them in. Their website claims the machine counts 600 coins per minute, but actual tests come in at about 400 coins per minute. Put a stopwatch on it next time you use the machine and tell us how fast your Coinstar machine counts the pennies.
If your percentages are low.. just sort more.

I just called half a dozen in my local area (north orange county, CA) and none have any. One reccommended the Coinstar in her local grocery store. |
