Are all modern S-mint proofs 90% silver? How do you tell the difference if not?

nope, there are both silver and clad S mint proof coins. You can tell by edge checking the dimes, quarters and halves. If they have the copper stripe showing they are clad. |

The five modern S-mint halves I have found (72, 88, 91, 99 & 08) were all clad proofs. I guess the best way to know is edge check 'em. Clads will look like normal business strike clads (a copper sandwich)...silver proofs will have a silver edge. You could also weigh them. Clad proof halves should weigh 11.34 grams, silver proof halves will weigh 12.50 grams. Quarters and dimes could also be edge checked...I do not know the weight difference between the different dime and quarter proofs.

The proofs were all clads, except for 1976 which had clads and 40%ers, until 1992. In 1992 and afterwards, the 90%ers were minted again in Prestige Proof sets. The clad proofs have been minted by the mint since 1972. |
