| Do you have to be able to print sticky labels or can you just print on regular paper and tape to box? |

You can tape it. They just ask that you don't tape over the barcode, as some types of tape make it difficult to scan. |

I've received them with either. I tape them on myself. |

Yes you can add insurance when you print your label on line also if you want it. When I ship pennies I never add insurance. I just put on delivery conformation which gives you a tracking number which you get for free when you print your label online. |

| Yes, insurance is available online, but keep in mind that regular insurance does not cover bullion anyway. It's fine for just about everything else, but for things like cash and bullion, Registered Mail is the only way to get insurance. |

That's true. I've gotten a lot of complaints about that duct tape over the bar code. |

I haven't taped over the bar code, but my printer didn't have enough ink to have the bar code register when scanned. They weren't really happy to have to manually enter in the numbers. So it will still ship if you tape over it. You may just have made some enemies in the process...

Well theirs your problem!! You don't use "The Handyman's Secret Weapon" to cover the barcode. You use clear packing tape. |

Rates went up on 1/4. Except the Small Flat Rate Box, which stayed the same, and the Flat Rate Envelope, which went down 5 cents

My small flat rate box rate went from $4.80 to $4.85. I haven't shipped the other flat rate stuff to see if I noticed any other changes.
Hey Nate, do you know how much it would cost to ship 25, 10+ oz copper bars to England? |

Should be under 20 pounds total, so a regular (medium) Flat Rate Box would be $41.28 online.
It seems the domestic retail price stayed the same for the small box, but the online price went up a nickel...wonder who decided that one . The increase in International was more significant at about $2 for medium boxes. |

| I mailed a small flat rate yesterday. It had a small amount of clear tape on the ends and the middle bulged ever so slightly. You'd have thought I was trying to send a bomb through the mail the way the clerk was acting. "You can't tape these and they have to be perfectly flat", she says. She went on and on makng sure everyone in line knew she was upset. She even called the Supervisor over to see if it could be sent. The Supervisor says, "It's marginal. It might get kicked back." Is it any wonder the post office loses so much money? |

That is an incorrect judgment by your post office. point them to the DMM section 300, part 123, #1.5:
quote:
1.5 Flat-Rate Envelope and Boxes
Any amount of material may be mailed in a USPS-produced Priority Mail flat-rate box or flat-rate envelope. When sealing a flat-rate box or flat-rate envelope, the container flaps must be able to close within the normal folds. Tape may be applied to the flaps and seams to reinforce the container, provided the design of the container is not enlarged by opening the sides and the container is not reconstructed in any way.
the above can be found here:
You must be logged in to see this link.
I used to carry a printout of this until I got my clerks trained.
(for a while they had a rule that you could only use "1" piece of tape on a flat rate envelope, but that has been superceded)
As long as you don't "break" the seams, you are fine. I regularly ship 5 pounds of mixed foreign coins in the flat rate envelope and they look like pregnant guppies.
Note: the DMM is the Post Office bible of minutiae regarding all things postal... |
