I am shocked each time I go grocery shopping by the rising prices.

A can of tuna, solid white albacore is now $1.99, and that after they reduced the size from 6 to 5 ounces.

A loaf of bread; Maiers Italian unseeded, 20 oz, is now $3.49.
A box of Cheerios (18oz, used to be 20oz) is $5.29.
A dozen eggs, $2.59.
1/2 gal milk, $2.39.

Is it just me, or have food prices, particularly those that require grain to produce, have roughly doubled in the last couple years?

Well, a couple of years ago didn't they sign a law saying like 30% of the annual corn harvest was to go to ethanol?

Cause and effect?

food prices are ridiculous. i buy store brand everything unless i have coupons that make name brands cheaper. i try to buy in bulk when i can and havent had steak in months.

yes they are reducing the package sizes and the price remains the same or sometimes even goes up. but im not convinced the average joe even notices.

it now makes me even angrier to see the people in front of me use food stamps to buy their groceries then pay cash for beer and smokes and a glamour magazine.

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

Just the beginning of rising food prices especially grain and soy based foods. Watch sugar and coffee as they are set for price increases also once the existing warehouse supplies run low and they have to replenish.
We are shipping a large quantity of grain(wheat, corn)and soy to China and India. As there economies grow, so do their middle class which allows for better diets and increases the demand for such foods. They are not exporting these products any more rather building up their stockpiles. In the U.S. we are also not having the crop yields we are used to because of weather related problems and farm subsidies.

I work in a grocery store. Go and check out the aluminum foil prices.

I stock up when things are on sale. Buy one get one is the best, even better when you have a coupon. We double up to .99 everyday.

One stocker figured out how to buy 2 frozen dinners for 3 cent. The coupon doubled and all he pays is the tax.

You just have to shop smart, use coupons while it is on sale, and load up when you find a good deal.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

In general retail food prices are outrageous but I can't remember when I paid retail for a food item with an exception to milk or eggs on a rare occasion.

On a bright note I paid less for flour than I did last year but sugar prices have skyrocketed this year.

I normally buy generic/store brands too, but the store brand "Cheerios" are like eating sandpaper. As for steak, I noticed that the beef/steak section of the cooler that used to be 30 feet long is now only about 10 feet.

I can't confirm the percentage, but yeah, we're turning food into "fuel" now, thanks to the thieving turds in DC. Hey, anything to get kickbacks from the lobbyists, right?

STARVE DC EVERY WAY YOU CAN!!!!! And tell two friends to do the same, and they tell two friends, and so on, and so on.....

We eat a lot of fresh vegetables and not much prepared food, so our grocery bill is not too bad, but some things are really expensive. Eggplant is sky high, as are red and yellow bell peppers. All three of us like veggies, so we are able to take advantage of bulk buying at Costco. In reality, not very many things are cheaper there, but fruits and vegetables are for sure. You can get a 2.5 pound bag of baby spinach there for just $4.50. That's a LOT of spinach. (Oh, Delaware Jack, you totally have to find someone with a Costco membership and get them to buy you some Cheerios -- they sell a two-pack of the GIANT boxes for like, $6, so way cheaper than at the grocery store. Honey Nut Cheerios are a little more, like $6.50 or so.)

Milk has really gone up, and is never on sale. We started buying the milk from a local dairy that a couple of grocery stores here carry. It's $5 a gallon but that milk is AWESOME. Even the lowfat tastes like full fat, and the whole milk is sooo good.

There are still pretty good sales on meat here. Chicken breasts $1.99/lb., chicken thighs $.79/lb., london broil $1.99/lb. Like slickeast said, stock up when you see it. You can get several meals off one of those rotisserie chickens, too, plus you have a nice carcass for chicken soup.

But yeah, for the few things we buy that are processed -- salad dressing, canned tuna, potato chips -- very expensive, IMO. OTOH, the bright side is that maybe folks will start to eat more fresh, healthy food and rely less on the packaged stuff.

Oh, good dog food has gotten crazy expensive, so now I just feed ours a base of the grain free food ($$$) with chicken thighs, broth, and cooked carrots or sweet potatoes on top. It actually works out cheaper that way, and I think it's better for them.

Forgot to add: I don't recommend the Winking Owl chardonnay. It's like sucking on an oak chip.

Luckily I do not yet have to buy groceries...
However I have taught my parents about using the labels on the price stickers that show the price per ounce and things like that. Usually buying in bulk at Walmart actually raises the price. Companies do this because the average consumer believes that buying in bulk=lower price, which for the most part isn't true.

Its funny how the government says there is no inflation going on. My mom was quite upset that social security did not get their COLA (Cost of Living Allowance) increase.

Once again the Federal government not in touch with reality.

I try not to pay more than $2/lb for meat if possible. When there's a good sale on ground beef or chicken breasts etc we'll load up the freezer, since you never know how long it will be until next time. Pork seemed to be on sale a lot over this past year, my girlfriend's theory is that demand was down because of "swine" flu. We buy a lot of sale tenderloin, but there were some good sales on bacon this year too, $1-2/lb. Milk usually doesn't go far below $4 for 4L, for butter $3/lb. With vegetables and grain products etc I don't follow the prices too closely, but bread is definitely more expensive than a few years ago.

Hey Delawhere, in your area, check out Stoltzfus meats somewhere near naamans rd. Usually 98% lean ground beef for $2.89. Great meats, good prices. I shop the one in Intercourse PA.
I also hit a place called dutchway market on rt 41 near Gap PA. Can sometimes get 93% lean ground beef for $1.99. Also get jumbo eggs usually $1.59 a dozen, and a lot of things are just a few cents cheaper than the usual suspects. Sales can be really good, and they have these organic chickens that taste nothing like any other chicken I ever had. WAY better. You can also get chicken wings almost the size of your fist for $2.39 and butter on sale is 3lb for $5.
The worst store I know price wise in your area is Acme.

In western New York Aldi's is the least expensive. In my area there are too many grocery type stores competing and that helps some. Shop the sales, use the coupons. With in a ten mile area there is a Tops, Wal Mart, K mart, Save a lot, Wegmans, BJ's wholesale club, also rite aid, cvs and walgreen. No shortage of deals when they are all fighting for shoppers dollars. The local salvation army has a free bread day which is really cool. Some times the limit to 5 bread type items per day/person.

slickeast is deadon about the coupons. I just got 6 boxes of hamburger helper and 8 cans progresso soup for $7 (that's .50 per item) combining the coupons with the sale...full price would have been $32. I almost felt bad since I work for this grocery chain.

I put up some tags last night and 12 pack Iams cat food went from $11 something to $16 something.

One thing that drives the prices is of course the competition or lack there of. Here in central Ohio we have Giant Eagle, Kroger, Meijer, Wal-Mart, Sav-A-Lot and Aldis plus all the Targets and Kmarts with their grocery sections.

The chain I work for has a pretty good perks program. Employees get 10% off all store-brand items (including meat). And all customers get .20 off the price of a gallon of gasoline for every $50 spent in the store (including gift card purchases). Then when you pump your gas you're given 1% off your grocery bill for every 10 gallons of gas you pump up.

I've gotten a free tank of gas twice and paid less than a $1/gallon several times. The "food perks" % that are earned do expire 3 months after you earn them so the most I've been able to get is 14% (plus my 10% employee discount) off a grocery purchase. My little 4-banger just doesn't use that much gas.
