I went on a weekend trip and stopped at a roadside McDonald's. I received a 1959 Canadian quarter in change. Wikipedia tells me those are 80% silver! Sometimes the sheeple just don't know what they have in their hands. It has been since the 70s since I received any silver in my change.

heh - they probably thought they were sticking you with a crappy canadian coin - little do they realize that coin is worth $1.90 US in silver content alone.

"Sometimes the sheeple just don't know what they have in their hands."

You got htat right.
I once was lucky enough to buy a silver Canadian Quarter for 50¢, though you did better than I did Texcattlerancher.

I should have chosen "Cut-n-Paste" as a forum name, since that is what I do, mostly.

When it rains, it pours; if you can call two silver finds from change within a couple of weeks of each other a "pours." Spouse was cleaning out cabinets in the kitchen and ran across a container of change from a year 2000 garage sale we had. Knowing I like to look through change for the odd treasure, she sat the container out for me to look through. I almost did not look through the rolled dimes because one rarely finds anything worthwhile to keep in dimes. But, I knew it would bother me if I did not look. Lo and behold, a 1964 silver dime was found!

I never even thought about that. I get and spend Canadian coins all the time and never thought about the possibility that they had any Silver at all. Now kicking myself.

Carl, you have said in other threads that you have a difficult time spending half dollars and small dollars, yet you mention here that you spend Canadian coins all the time. I'm curious as to why people in your area will accept Canadian coins before accepting domestic currency. Do you travel to Canada often, or does Canadian coinage circulate freely in the Chicago area?

Around me I have no problems spending canadian Pennies(cents), some
Nickels, Dimes and Quarters. The Nickels with the not round edges get returned to me as a hey what is this. I don't have to much trouble spending the US halves but have been told, or rather nicely requested, to stop with those stupid things. The baby dollars and/or $2 bills are really a pain. In stores, if attempted to spend it holds up lines and I know how I feel when someone writes a check and everything comes to a standstill while being authenticated. Same with the baby dollars and $2 bills. I receive and spend Canadian SMALL denominations with no problems. I've never been asked or told not to use them in my entire life and that is well into the 60 year area of spending. So far I've never received nor spent a larger than a Canadian Quarter and not even sure if they have any bigger than a quarter there. Never been there and no reason to want to go there now unless someone says they have better coin shows than we do here.
As to Canadian coins circulating around here. I see them all the time. Very common or at least with me. Maybe someone knows I don't care and constantly sees to it that I get them all but most people I know say the same thing. Just no big deal if Canadian or US for small denominations. Just how much is the difference in a US or Canadian Nickel or Dime anyway. If I had to worry about that small an item, it's time to re-evaluate my life style.
I've had stage 4 Cancer, cataracts and a few other medical problems so worrying about a Canadian coin is just not a priority now.
