Does anyone on this board have any Third Reich Silver coins? Are the coins worth more for their silver content or historical value?

I had a dealer in Germany offer to supply it to me for my website, and I got the impression that it sold somewhat like our 90% silver coins do here, but we haven't really talked numbers yet. It's something I plan to look into more for 2010. |

The Nazi Swastika, certain books written by certain authors (Namely Hitler, Himmler, Goering, etc.), and a few other things are effective;y Banned in Germany. Coins aren't one of them, unless they have the Nazi Swastika on them.

I don't understand this. No WWII artifacts in Germany if they have a swastika? Even coins? Makes no sence to me. Guess I can't move to Germany....
Deal
p.s. No, I'm not a white supremist or anything, just a WWII buff. I have several things with the dreaded swastika on it. |
Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |

It was part of the de-Nazification program implemented by the USA, Russia, France & England after WW2.
When I visted Germany many years ago I quickly noticed all the planes (ME109, ME262, etc.) in the museums have the swastikas removed, only the iron crosses were present. Even grafitti with swastikas is promptly removed in public places. They really have a zero tolerance for this dark period of their past.
Some other neighbouring countries (France, Italy and a few others) have similar laws banning Nazi items. |

I would wonder if a lot of the Nazi coins aren't fakes. I mean they may be real silver, but not real Nazi coins. I have a silver Nazi ring but since it came from Latvia I wonder if it isn't a fake too. |

I have seen alot of miltary Nazi stuff (like medals and uniform decorations) originate from Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Baltic, etc) that came from grave robbers who pilfered dead German soldiers graves. I would never touch this stuff, too much bad karma associated with it.

Who knows where any of our gold and silver has been? Wars were fought and people slaughtered for precious metals throughout history. Do you really know the karma of yours? |

I also have a 5 Reichsmark coins that is also silver. Both the 2 & 5 Reichsmark coins have Paul von Hidenburg depicted on them. If I had been a American GI in Germany during WWII, I would have looted EVERYTHING of value from the defeated Nazis. Maybe GIs returning from Iraq will bring back some "liberated" Saddam gold and silver! |

not all of the silver from that period has a swastika on it. those that do sell for a decent premium over melt because of the historical curiosity. maybe twice the silver value. they come up on ebay frequently.
i dont' think looting was too easy. my father was there - i'll have to ask him.
as for bad karma, i never thought about the metals coming from graves. makes sense. a lot of people - even dealers - won't buy dental gold for that reason, although there was a dental gold bar here on realcent not too long ago. but yeah i'm sure a lot of dental gold is or was just melted and not labeled as such.
as for the speech implications, there is no first amendment there and lately they have had a cultural shift to purge this. part of that urge is defensive - it became retro hip to be a nazi - but part of it is denying their past. don't think the U.S. is above this sort of thing wiht its political correctness and such. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X

I have iron cross (with swastika inset) medal that I bought from a WW2 veteran who got it from a captured German soldier in exchange for a packet of cigarettes. The inner black part of the cross is made of iron, but the trim is done in silver. After WW2 ended, most German soldiers were pretty anxious to get rid of items that connected them to Hitler and they traded many personal items like medal, lugars, etc to American and British GIs in exchange for luxuries like cigarettes, candy and alcohol. |

I don't think taking guns, knives, rings, money, etc off of captured soldiers was too difficult because I know a lot of old men that have guns that they brought back from the war. Perhaps the Army Officers didn't allow it too much, but I would have been very tempted to rob the captured enemy soldiers that was justing shooting at me of everything of vaule that they had on their persons. |

I inherited a WWII collection of items that included a Browning .45, holster, belt, currency, coins and so on. Some of it I have disposed of, the coins and currency I retained as well as adding to the coin collection. Coins are about the only items with swastikas on them that could be sold on eBay. I have several other items like a solders knife fork and spoon mess set that they made me remove. I too am not a white supremacist, racist nor anything along those lines. However I collect Third Reich, KKK and slavery items when I come across them. I am a believer that if we do not remember history, it may be repeated. I also collect Zeppelin memorabilia, which is also war related. To answer your question though, you may find that some of these items are not silver, copies and if authentic may be only 40% silver. Germany has a very long history of which the Third Reich is only a small part of. German coins are very collectible and have a rich history. Most were melted down leaving a very small population remaining. |
