When you turn in your aluminum cans, do you turn them in at one of those can machines or turn them straight into one of them metal recycling workers to weigh?
I wasn't sure exactly how accurate those machines are.

| I only have one place here to return them. It is a recycling yard. It is only about 1/2 mile away, so that makes it convenient. |

| The yard isnt too far from my house. However, since the economy went down the toilet, they cut back their hours of operation. They have one of those conveyor bealt like machines outside of the yard for turning in cans after hours. |

| You actually get more money from the machine as it counts each can, whereas the weight uses the average of all cans. I have mine weighed as it takes me a couple of hours to feed them all into the machine. I figure my time is worth the couple of dollars difference. |

| I have never heard or seen one of these machines which you speak of. Does it issue you a ticket or something? How do you redeem it for cash when the yard is closed, do you have to come back the next day or something? |

The only option I have ever had is to turn them in to a recycling yard where they weigh them and then issue you a statement and cash.

We have a alot of these machines in the major grocery stores here in Canada. They print out a ticket when you are finished and you bring it to a cashier to receive your money.
The only problem I have had with these machines is that they work by reading barcodes on the cans to determine if a valid can has been put into the machine, not by weighing them. If your cans are crumpled or dirty, it takes them but does not credit you with the deposit. You need cans that are in reasonably good condition for them to credit the deposit. |

Thanks for the link. I would still have no idea what these things were without it. I think it would be safe to say that around here, even though the machine counts instead of weighs, there would be alot of rocks and weights in the cans because no one would be supervising the customers and they wouldn't realize how the machine operates. It wouldn't pay them anything more, but the owner would sure catch hell cleaning out all those "cheated" cans. Interesting machine though. |

Here in California they will do your cans/deposit bottles by count...but only if each material is 50 bottles/cans or less.
And for all other states, as for the weighing accuracy, sometimes its good sometimes it isn't, but as far as I know even the worst weighing system shouldn't short you too bad. I did some math...
(Average sized cans, amounts for most of 'em) ~31 is in a pound. So that is about 14.6 grams for each can. -So if the scale is accurate to the nearest 1/10 (45.5g) of a pound, you will be either rounded up...or down...by 1.5 cans. -So, if the scale is accurate to the nearest 1/2 (226g) of a pound, you will be either rounded up...or down, by about 8-9 cans. -So if the scale is accurate to the nearest pound, you will be either rounded up...or down, by about 17-18 cans. -So if it were up to me, I probably wouldn't feel comfortable using a scale that isn't at least 1/2 of a pound accurate(for deposit refunds anyhow)
If you take the weight for those taller looking cans, you get about 9.1 cents each if it is done by weight. You will get 10 cents if they count them. But the store (usually) charges 8 cents deposit, so if its weighed or counted, isn't a worry. (California redemption, but this weighing info is also good for metal only states with no deposit)
Happy can hunting. |
