Like Dumpster Diver's post on Commemorative Halves I would like to find out what kind of success everyone has had in pulling older halves (Barbers/Walkers/Franklins).
I'll start:
Barber - NONE Walker - 1 (1939) Franklin - 2 (both 1962D).
These have come from 22.46 equivalent full boxes of halves, all machine rolled and packed by Coin Wrap Inc. My brother and I started searching half dollar boxes on 11/21/2009. In addition to the older halves, the 22.46 equivalent boxes have yielded (6) JFK 90% and (123) JFK 40%. One monster box gave up 71 of the total 123 40%'ers.
Take care,
Jeff

I have found 1 barber (loose in a teller tray) I have searched about 75K to find it. I cannot tell how many walkers or franklins I have found.
Maybe I will keep better track of my sorts this year. |

Asking zerocd about how many Walkers and Bens he has found is like asking a normal sorter how many wheat cents he has found. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Country make most of us look like very casual sorters.
He has some nice sources too. Jealous!
I will be hunting new banks this coming month. Getting a bit dry.

2009 Totals
While I post my totals, there many searchers who don't and they are finding much more than me. I've searched $76947 $77947 of halves in boxes, bags, and CWRs this year. 97% of the rolls I have searched were bullet rolls in Brink's $500 boxes I get at my source bank every week. I went through 20 consequtive SKUNK boxes this year, but I'm persistent. Despite the SKUNKs, I have averaged 8 SILVERs per box this year. Right now, I'm on a SILVER vein and may have a few more SILVERs before New Year's day.
Barber Half 1 (1908-O with a hole in it) Walkers 39 40 (1920 was the oldest one) Franklins 75 76 (two proofs)
There's SILVER out there, but you've got to be persistent and find the treasure.
Happy New Years everybody! |

1964 Kennedy is the oldest thing I have found. And that is in searching $50000.00 or more in halves this year.
Now that I have a bank that can order loose in bags, I will probably pass 100K next year. |

How successful are you finding silver in bank plastic wrapped rolls? All the banks I go to refuse to order me bags of coins. I went through $500 once of bank rolled plastic wrapped halves and didn't find any worth keeping so I may have given up too easily. |

Impressive numbers Country. I guess halves are like pennies.. if your percentages are low, "Just sort more!"
I have found no Barbers, Bust, SL, WL, or Bens this year.
I will just keep sorting pennies.. there's a winner in every box! |

I like pennies in every box as well.
I found an IHC 1891 last night as well as 1916, 1920 and quite a few from 30's and 40's. Great copper ratio as well along with some BU's from the fifties and sixties. Hard to go wrong with pennies. I already rocked the boat ordering 8 boxes of halves a week from one bank. A second bank knocked me out for half that.
Now I get two each a week from three banks and get nickels and pennies from many banks.
I don't know how you have bribed them to get 12 boxes Country.
I note that fb101 has been quiet but has some nice numbers.

Has anyone gotten halves on a regular basis that are plastic-wrapped? It would make for very swift roll searches. |

I get my dimes in plastic and they are easy to edge search.
My halves come in paper bullet rolls. Unlike dimes, I like checking the halves individually to get the funny-edged SILVER 40%ers, proofs, and NIFCs. |

I have a good relationship with my source bank's head teller - VERY IMPORTANT!! I can order as many boxes of halves that I want. Unfortunately, there are only so many dump banks and those that you have you don't want to over-dump and be cut off. Every now and then, I will get a bunch of boxes around major holidays - less competition during these major holidays. |

Yeah, I seek out dimes in the plastic rolls when I can. I have found I need to double check my searching of the edges on them too. I have missed on a few occasions some silver dimes only to check the next day in better light to spot them. Usually these are the dimes that are on the roll ends. It happens. I find 2 to 3 silver dimes per a box. Not a huge amount, but fairly steady. We have probably discussed on some of these threads on how many dimes were minted. A quick look in the red book suggest that close to 5 billion silver dimes were minted from 1946 on. I don't even think a billion silver halves were minted for the same period. I believe a good quantity of dimes still circulate out there. Just not as many searchers for those as the halves by comparison I bet. |

I don't post here much these days but I am still a member. Only so much time when you work 40 hr week and CRH about another 40 hrs a week. Older coins I found this year include (1) Seated Liberty half (1854 I believe) (6) Barbers (56) Walkers (204) Bens Saturday night I surpassed last years silver total and hope 24 more boxes by years end will get ME to my 1K oz goal. HH all, Mark Add: I should note that I will have searched about $900,000 in halves this year. |

Hi Mark,
1K TOZ in SILVER from rolls/bags - that's impressive!
I'd be interested to know how you handle your dumps. From your statistics, it would appear that you do $18K/week in halves. |

I am blessed with a dump bank with lots of branches and I have been doing this since before they knew I shouldn't be so now I'm a permanent fixture. When I go to the bank (to pick up OR dump) its like Cheers without the beer, cause everybody knows my name. Breaking in a new teller is comical, once I went to pick up $3K and the lady said "I heard about you, your a legend!" I said Yea everybody here knows ME pretty good. and she said "No I heard about you at my last bank", one I didn't even go to. My competition hates ME, poor bastages. I would search more but its alot easier to lose a bank than it is get a new one to order, but I never pass up an opportunity when they say "We don't have any halves but we could order some for you". HH all, Mark |

Do you use a hand cart?
That's some brute force searching. From your numbers found I would say you have a lot of skunks.
1K Toz is awesome.
Doing some shirtail calcs and your silver find ratio is not much different from mine.
What method of dumping do you use?

The more boxes I buy the more skunks I get but also a greater chance of the good ones. I can't find the pic of my "lil mule" but is a small movers dollie and handle from Harbour Freight with a Pepsi crate screwed on top. Dump method is coin counter in bank lobby. I try to go to the banks when least busy cause I'm always accosted about the cart- I blame it on hyperinflation, next week I'll have to bring a wheelbarrow. HH Mark BTW I haven't made it to 1K yet, still 65 oz to go. |
